# RSA Class

Implements RSA public-key cryptography to encrypt/decrypt and sign/verify messages.

## Syntax

**ipworksencrypt.rsa()**

## Remarks

The RSA class implements RSA public-key cryptography to encrypt/decrypt messages and sign/verify hash signatures.

To begin you must either specify an existing key or create a new key. Existing private keys may be specified by setting [Key](#rsakey-property). To create a new key call [CreateKey](#rsacreatekey-method). Alternatively an existing certificate may be specified by setting [Certificate](#rsacertificate-property)

**Signing**

To sign data first set [Key](#rsakey-property) or [Certificate](#rsacertificate-property). Specify the input data using [InputFile](#rsainputfile-property) or [InputMessage](#rsainputmessage-property). Next call [Sign](#rsasign-method). The class will populate [HashValue](#rsahashvalue-property) and [HashSignature](#rsahashsignature-property). After calling [Sign](#rsasign-method) the public key must be sent to the recipient along with [HashSignature](#rsahashsignature-property).

**Encrypting**

To encrypt data set [RecipientKey](#rsarecipientkey-property) or [RecipientCert](#rsarecipientcert-property). Specify the input data using [InputFile](#rsainputfile-property) or [InputMessage](#rsainputmessage-property). Next call [Encrypt](#rsaencrypt-method). The class will populate [OutputMessage](#rsaoutputmessage-property), or write to the file specified by [OutputFile](#rsaoutputfile-property).

**Signature Verification**

To verify a signature specify the input data using [InputFile](#rsainputfile-property) or [InputMessage](#rsainputmessage-property). Set [SignerKey](#rsasignerkey-property) or [SignerCert](#rsasignercert-property). Next set [HashSignature](#rsahashsignature-property) and call [VerifySignature](#rsaverifysignature-method). The [VerifySignature](#rsaverifysignature-method) method will return True if the signature was successfully verified.

**Decrypting**

To decrypt data first set [Key](#rsakey-property) or [Certificate](#rsacertificate-property). Specify the input data using [InputFile](#rsainputfile-property) or [InputMessage](#rsainputmessage-property). Next call [Decrypt](#rsadecrypt-method). The class will populate [OutputMessage](#rsaoutputmessage-property), or write to the file specified by [OutputFile](#rsaoutputfile-property).

**Input and Output Properties**

The class will determine the source and destination of the input and output based on which properties are set.

The order in which the input properties are checked is as follows:

- [InputFile](#rsainputfile-property)
- [InputMessage](#rsainputmessage-property)

When a valid source is found, the search stops. The order in which the output properties are checked is as follows:

- [OutputFile](#rsaoutputfile-property)
- [OutputMessage](#rsaoutputmessage-property): The output data is written to this property if no other destination is specified.

**RSA Keys**

A RSA key is made up of a number of individual parameters.

The public key consists of the following parameters:

- KeyModulus
- KeyExponent

The class also includes the KeyPublicKey property which holds the PEM formatted public key for ease of use. This is helpful if you are in control of both sides of the encryption/signing and decryption/signature verification process. When sending the public key to a recipient note that not all implementations will support using the PEM formatted value in KeyPublicKey in which case the individual parameters must be sent.

The private key may be represented in one of two ways. Both are mathematically equivalent. Private key format 1:

- KeyModulus
- KeyP
- KeyQ
- KeyDP
- KeyDQ

 Private key format 2 is simpler but has decreased performance when decrypting and signing. This format is:

- KeyModulus
- KeyD

 The class also include the KeyPrivateKey property which holds the PEM formatted private key for ease of use. This is helpful for storing the private key more easily.

If set to True, when [Decrypt](#rsadecrypt-method) is called the class will expect [InputMessage](#rsainputmessage-property) or [InputFile](#rsainputfile-property) to hold hex encoded data. The class will then hex decode the data and perform decryption as normal.

If set to True, when [Sign](#rsasign-method) is called the class will compute the hash for the specified file and populate [HashValue](#rsahashvalue-property) with the hex encoded hash value. It will then create the hash signature and populate [HashSignature](#rsahashsignature-property) with the hex encoded hash signature value. If [HashValue](#rsahashvalue-property) is specified directly, it must be a hex encoded value.

If set to True, when [VerifySignature](#rsaverifysignature-method) is called the class will compute the hash value for the specified file and populate [HashValue](#rsahashvalue-property) with the hex encoded hash value. It will then hex decode [HashSignature](#rsahashsignature-property) and verify the signature. [HashSignature](#rsahashsignature-property) must hold a hex encoded value. # [RSA](#rsa-class).config Method

Sets or retrieves a configuration setting.

## Syntax

```text
async rsa.config(configurationString : string): Promise< string>
```

## Remarks

Config is a generic method available in every class. It is used to set and retrieve [configuration settings](#config-settings-class-ipworksencryptrsa) for the class.

These settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the class, access to these *internal properties* is provided through the Config method.

To set a configuration setting named *PROPERTY*, you must call *Config("PROPERTY=VALUE")*, where *VALUE* is the value of the setting expressed as a string. For boolean values, use the strings "True", "False", "0", "1", "Yes", or "No" (case does not matter).

To read (query) the value of a [configuration setting](#config-settings-class-ipworksencryptrsa), you must call *Config("PROPERTY")*. The value will be returned as a string.

# [RSA](#rsa-class).createKey Method

Creates a new key.

## Syntax

```text
async rsa.createKey(): Promise< void>
```

## Remarks

This method creates a new public and private key.

When calling CreateKey the [Key](#rsakey-property) property is populated with a new private and public key.

- KeyD

When a valid source is found, the search stops. The order in which the output properties are checked is as follows:

- [OutputFile](#rsaoutputfile-property)
- [OutputMessage](#rsaoutputmessage-property): The output data is written to this property if no other destination is specified.

**Key Size and the Maximum Length of Data**

RSA has an upper limit to the amount of data that can be encrypted or decrypted, also known as message length. This can typically be calculated as the size of the key minus the size of the RSA header and padding.

When not using OAEP, the following formula and table can be referenced. (RSA Key Bytes) - (Header Bytes) = Length of data, where Header Bytes is always 11.

| RSA Key Length (bits) | Length (bits) | Length (bytes) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1024 | 936 | 117 |
| 2048 | 1960 | 245 |
| 3072 | 2984 | 373 |
| 4096 | 4008 | 501 |

When using OAEP, the following formula and table can be referenced. (RSA Key Bytes) - (2 * Hash Length Bytes) - 2 = Length of data. The table below assumes SHA-256 for the hash, so Hash Length Bytes is 32.

| RSA Key Length (bits) | Length (bits) | Length (bytes) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1024 | 496 | 62 |
| 2048 | 1520 | 190 |
| 3072 | 2544 | 318 |
| 4096 | 3568 | 446 |

- [InputMessage](#rsainputmessage-property)

When a valid source is found, the search stops. The order in which the output properties are checked is as follows:

- [OutputFile](#rsaoutputfile-property)
- [OutputMessage](#rsaoutputmessage-property): The output data is written to this property if no other destination is specified.

## Constructors

```text
public Certificate();
```

 Creates a instance whose properties can be set.

```text
public Certificate(String certificateFile);
```

 Opens * CertificateFile * and reads out the contents as an X.509 public key.

```text
public Certificate(byte[] encoded);
```

 Parses * Encoded * as an X.509 public key.

```text
public Certificate(int storeType, String store, String storePassword, String subject);
```

 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a file containing the certificate store. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.

 After the store has been successfully opened, the class will attempt to find the certificate identified by * Subject * . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN). The * Subject * parameter can also take an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load in a "Thumbprint=value" format.

```text
public Certificate(int storeType, String store, String storePassword, String subject, String configurationString);
```

 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a file containing the certificate store. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.

 * ConfigurationString * is a newline-separated list of name-value pairs that may be used to modify the default behavior. Possible values include "PersistPFXKey", which shows whether or not the PFX key is persisted after performing operations with the private key. This correlates to the PKCS12_NO_PERSIST_KEY CryptoAPI option. The default value is True (the key is persisted). "Thumbprint" - an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load. When specified, this value is used to select the certificate in the store. This is applicable to the * cstUser * , * cstMachine * , * cstPublicKeyFile * , and * cstPFXFile * store types. "UseInternalSecurityAPI" shows whether the platform (default) or the internal security API is used when performing certificate-related operations.

```
 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a byte array containing the certificate data. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.
 After the store has been successfully opened, the class will attempt to find the certificate identified by * Subject * . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN). The * Subject * parameter can also take an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load in a "Thumbprint=value" format.
```text
public Certificate(int storeType, byte[] store, String storePassword, String subject, String configurationString);
```
 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a byte array containing the certificate data. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.
 After the store has been successfully opened, the class will attempt to find the certificate identified by * Subject * . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN).  After the store has been successfully opened, the class will load * Encoded * as an X.509 certificate and search the opened store for a corresponding private key.
# RSAKey Type
Contains the typical parameters for the RSA algorithm.
## Remarks
This type is made up of fields that represent the private and public key parameters used by the RSA algorithm.
**RSA Keys**
A RSA key is made up of a number of individual parameters.
The public key consists of the following parameters:
- KeyModulus
- KeyExponent
The class also includes the KeyPublicKey property which holds the PEM formatted public key for ease of use. This is helpful if you are in control of both sides of the encryption/signing and decryption/signature verification process. When sending the public key to a recipient note that not all implementations will support using the PEM formatted value in KeyPublicKey in which case the individual parameters must be sent.
The private key may be represented in one of two ways. Both are mathematically equivalent. Private key format 1:
- KeyModulus
- KeyP
- KeyQ
- KeyDP
- KeyDQ
 Private key format 2 is simpler but has decreased performance when decrypting and signing. This format is:
- KeyModulus
- KeyD
 The class also include the KeyPrivateKey property which holds the PEM formatted private key for ease of use. This is helpful for storing the private key more easily.
The following fields are available:
- [D](#RSAKey_f_D)
- [DP](#RSAKey_f_DP)
- [DQ](#RSAKey_f_DQ)
- [Exponent](#RSAKey_f_Exponent)
- [InverseQ](#RSAKey_f_InverseQ)
- [Modulus](#RSAKey_f_Modulus)
- [P](#RSAKey_f_P)
- [PrivateKey](#RSAKey_f_PrivateKey)
- [PublicKey](#RSAKey_f_PublicKey)
- [Q](#RSAKey_f_Q)
## Constructors
```text
public RSAKey();
```
 The default constructor creates a new RSAKey instance but does not assign a public or private key.
```text
public RSAKey(byte[] modulus, byte[] exponent);
```
 The public key constructor assigns an existing public key.
```text
public RSAKey(byte[] modulus, byte[] D, byte[] P, byte[] Q, byte[] DP, byte[] DQ);
```
 The private key constructor assigns an existing private key. Any valid combination of parameters representing a private key may be supplied. See the description at the top of this page for details on RSA private key formats.
# ReadableStream Type
## Syntax
```text
interface ReadableStream {
  read(buffer: Uint8Array, offset: number, length: number): Promise<number>;
  readSync(buffer: Uint8Array, offset: number, length: number): number;
  available(): number;
  close(): void;
  mark():void;
  reset():void;
  markSupported():boolean;
}
```
## Remarks
 The RSA class includes one or more API methods that accept a stream object as a parameter. To use such API members, create a custom object that implements the ReadableStream interface, and pass an instance of this object to the RSA class.
 When implementing the ReadableStream interface's properties and methods, they must behave as described below. If the implementation does not behave as expected, undefined behavior may occur.
```text
read(buffer: Uint8Array, offset: number, length: number): Promise <number> { }
```
```text
readSync(buffer: Uint8Array, offset: number, length: number): number { }
```
```text
available(): number { }
```
```text
close(): void { }
```
```text
mark(): void { }
```
```text
reset(): void { }
```
```text
markSupported(): boolean { }
```
|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| Methods |  |
| The following parameters are supported | buffer: The buffer to store the read data. <br> offset: The starting position within the buffer to write data.<br> length: The maximum number of bytes to read.<br> |
| read | Reads data from the stream into the provided buffer. This method must be implemented.<br> Returns a promise resolving to the number of bytes read, -1 if no data is available. |
| readSync | Synchronously reads data from the stream into the buffer. Returns the number of bytes read, -1 if no data is available. |
| available | Returns the number of bytes available for reading. This method must be implemented.<br> |
| close | Closes the stream and releases associated resources. |
| mark | Marks the current position in this stream. |
| reset | Repositions this stream to the position at the time the mark method was last called. |
| markSupported | Tests if this stream supports the mark and reset methods. Returns true if this stream supports the mark and reset methods; false otherwise. |
# WriteableStream Type
## Syntax
```text
interface WriteableStream {
  write(data: Uint8Array, offset: number, length: number): Promise<void>;
  writeSync(data: Uint8Array, offset: number, length: number): void;
  close(): void;
}
```
## Remarks
 The RSA class includes one or more API methods that accept a stream object as a parameter. To use such API members, create a custom object that implements the WriteableStream interface, and pass an instance of this object to the RSA class.
 When implementing the WriteableStream interface's properties and methods, they must behave as described below. If the implementation does not behave as expected, undefined behavior may occur.
```text
write(data: Uint8Array, offset: number, length: number): Promise <void> { }
```
```text
writeSync(data: Uint8Array, offset: number, length: number): void { }
```
```text
close(): void { }
```
|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| Methods |  |
| The following parameters are supported | data: The buffer containing the data to write.<br> offset: The starting position in the buffer to read data from.<br> length: The maximum number of bytes to write.<br> |
| write | Asynchronously writes data from the provided buffer to the stream. This method must be implemented.<br> Returns a promise that resolves when the write operation completes. |
| writeSync | Synchronously writes data from the buffer to the stream. |
| close | Closes the stream and releases associated resources. |
# Config Settings (*class *ipworksencrypt.[rsa](#rsa-class))
 The class accepts one or more of the following *configuration settings*. Configuration settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the class, access to these *internal properties* is provided through the [Config](#rsaconfig-method) method.
### RSA Config Settings
**KeyFormat**: How the public and private key are formatted.This setting controls the format of KeyPublicKey and KeyPrivateKey. By default these properties hold PEM formatted public and private key data. When set to 1 (XML) the keys are stored in a XML format. This only affects the values returned by the class; the actual keys remain the same regardless of this setting. Possible values are:
- 0 (PEM - PKCS#1)
- 1 (XML)
- 2 (PEM - PKCS#8 - default)
 The default value is 2 (PEM - PKCS#8).
**KeySize**: The size, in bits, of the secret key.This specifies the size, in bits, of the secret key. The minimum key size for RSA is 384. The maximum key size is 4096. Note that large values such as 4096 will impact performance. The default value is 1024.
**OAEPMGF1HashAlgorithm**: The MGF1 hash algorithm used with OAEP.This configuration setting specifies the MGF1 hash algorithm used when [UseOAEP](#rsauseoaep-property) is set to True. The default value is *SHA256*. Possible values are as follows:
- "SHA1"
- "SHA224"
- "SHA256" (default)
- "SHA384"
- "SHA512"
- "RIPEMD160"
- "MD2"
- "MD5"
- "MD5SHA1"
Note: The RSA hash algorithm used for OAEP is controlled via the [HashAlgorithm](#rsahashalgorithm-property) property.
**OAEPParams**: The hex encoded OAEP parameters.This configuration setting optionally specifies Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding (OAEP) parameters to be used when [UseOAEP](#rsauseoaep-property) is set to True. The value is an optional application-defined label and should be hex encoded. In most cases this does not need to be set; both sides must use the same value for encryption and decryption to succeed.
**UsePrimitive**: Enables primitive RSA encryption with no padding scheme or output modification.Instructs the component to use primitive RSA encryption with no padding scheme and without stripping leading zeros from the output of [Encrypt](#rsaencrypt-method). The output size will match the modulus length, as defined by the original RSA specification.
 Overrides the [UseOAEP](#rsauseoaep-property) property if specified.
 **Warning:** This configuration is not considered cryptographically secure on its own. Padding schemes play a critical role in the security of modern RSA implementations. Use only when necessary for compatibility, and note that the user assumes all responsibility when enabling this option.
### Base Config Settings
**BuildInfo**: Information about the product's build.When queried, this setting will return a string containing information about the product's build.
**CodePage**: The system code page used for Unicode to Multibyte translations.The default code page is Unicode UTF-8 (65001).
**LicenseInfo**: Information about the current license.When queried, this setting will return a string containing information about the license this instance of a class is using. It will return the following information:
- Product: The product the license is for.
- Product Key: The key the license was generated from.
- License Source: Where the license was found (e.g., RuntimeLicense, License File).
- License Type: The type of license installed (e.g., Royalty Free, Single Server).
- Last Valid Build: The last valid build number for which the license will work.
**MaskSensitiveData**: Whether sensitive data is masked in log messages.In certain circumstances it may be beneficial to mask sensitive data, like passwords, in log messages. Set this to *true* to mask sensitive data. The default is *true*.
**UseInternalSecurityAPI**: Whether or not to use the system security libraries or an internal implementation. When set to *false*, the class will use the system security libraries by default to perform cryptographic functions where applicable.
Setting this configuration setting to *true* tells the class to use the internal implementation instead of using the system security libraries.
 This setting is set to *false* by default on all platforms.
