# Struct ipworkspgp::MIME

The MIME struct allows for the simple encoding and decoding of MIME structures, such as message attachments and file uploads.

## Remarks

The struct may be used for decoding or encoding of messages. [message](#message-property-mime-struct) holds the content of the encoded message or the filename that holds the encoded data. The decoded data are provided in parts properties.

To decode a MIME message, you should first assign either the whole message (headers and body) to [message](#message-property-mime-struct) or put the message headers into the message_headers property and the message body or the filename holding it into the [message](#message-property-mime-struct) property. Calling [decode_from_file](#decode_from_file-method-mime-struct) or [decode_from_string](#decode_from_string-method-mime-struct) directs the struct to start parsing the message: it will fill out the [content_type](#content_type-property-mime-struct) and [content_type_attr](#content_type_attr-property-mime-struct) properties with message content-type information, and it will enter information about message parts into the parts properties, which includes part sizes, part content types, part content type attributes, part content disposition, part content disposition attributes, part encoding, part name, part filename, part headers, or part content (part-decoded string or part-decoded file) for each decoded part.

Calling the [decode_from_string](#decode_from_string-method-mime-struct) or [decode_from_file](#decode_from_file-method-mime-struct) to decode does not actually decode the message but only parses it. The real decoding is done when the part content in the parts properties is first accessed.

To encode data into a MIME message, you should first assign values for each part to either a part-decoded string or a part- decoded file in the parts properties property, and optionally assign values to the other part attributes in the parts properties. Assigning a value to the part-decoded string or a part-decoded file through the parts properties, fills out automatically the part headers into the parts properties for the respective part. Calling [encode_to_file](#encode_to_file-method-mime-struct) or [encode_to_string](#encode_to_string-method-mime-struct) directs the struct to fill out the [message](#message-property-mime-struct) with the message body and the message_headers with the headers.

The [on_progress](#on_progress-event-mime-struct) event is fired as the message is parsed and the data are decoded/encoded.

### Object Lifetime

 The *new()* method returns a mutable reference to a struct instance. The object itself is kept in the global list maintained by IPWorksPGP. Due to this, the MIME struct cannot be disposed of automatically. Please, call the *dispose(&mut; self)* method of MIME when you have finished using the instance.

This property includes the boundary separating the MIME parts. It has a maximum length of 80 bytes.

This property contains the boundary separating the MIME parts and has a maximum length of 80 bytes. The struct automatically generates a random boundary value during encoding, if no value is given. During decoding, this property is filled with the boundary from the actual MIME message.

The struct will truncate any string longer than 80 bytes if assigned to boundary.

This property holds the actual content of each part. The struct decodes the actual part of [message](#message-property-mime-struct) to [part_decoded_string](#part_decoded_string-property-mime-struct) when [part_decoded_string](#part_decoded_string-property-mime-struct)'s value is first queried.

Setting a value to [part_decoded_string](#part_decoded_string-property-mime-struct) fills out the corresponding [part_size](#part_size-property-mime-struct) with the string size if the corresponding [part_decoded_file](#part_decoded_file-property-mime-struct) is empty.

The struct checks during encoding first [part_decoded_file](#part_decoded_file-property-mime-struct): if it is empty, then the struct uses the value of [part_decoded_string](#part_decoded_string-property-mime-struct).

NOTE: It is recommended to use the [decode_part](#decode_part-method-mime-struct) method instead of querying this property.

This property contains the actual content encoding type for each part. This property determines how to encode the data or how they actually were encoded in the [message](#message-property-mime-struct), as specified in the *Content-Transfer-Encoding* header.

Possible values for the this property are as follows:

# config method ([MIME](#struct-ipworkspgpmime) Struct)

Sets or retrieves a configuration setting.

## Syntax

## Remarks

config is a generic method available in every struct. It is used to set and retrieve [configuration settings](#config-settings-mime-struct) for the struct.

These settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the struct, access to these *internal properties* is provided through the config method.

To set a configuration setting named *PROPERTY*, you must call *Config("PROPERTY=VALUE")*, where *VALUE* is the value of the setting expressed as a string. For boolean values, use the strings "True", "False", "0", "1", "Yes", or "No" (case does not matter).

To read (query) the value of a [configuration setting](#config-settings-mime-struct), you must call *Config("PROPERTY")*. The value will be returned as a string.

# decode_from_file method ([MIME](#struct-ipworkspgpmime) Struct)

This method decodes from a file.

Calling this method will return the decoded bytes, and in addition, the [part_decoded_string](#part_decoded_string-property-mime-struct) property will be populated with the string representation of the decoded data.

This method decodes the part specified by *index* to a temporary file. The full path to the temporary file is returned by this method. The user is responsible for deleting the temporary file.

# encode_to_file method ([MIME](#struct-ipworkspgpmime) Struct)

This method encodes to a file.

This method resets the values of all headers and part properties. It is an easy way to reset the struct's properties before starting to populate the part properties with new values.

# on_error event ([MIME](#struct-ipworkspgpmime) Struct)

Fired when information is available about errors during data delivery.

## Syntax

## Remarks

The on_error event is fired in case of exceptional conditions during message processing. Normally the struct fails with an error.

The *error_code* parameter contains an error code, and the *description* parameter contains a textual description of the error. For a list of valid error codes and their descriptions, please refer to the [Error Codes](#trappable-errors-mime-struct) section.

# on_header event ([MIME](#struct-ipworkspgpmime) Struct)

This event is fired every time a header is parsed.

## Remarks

The *part_index* parameter contains the index of the part containing the current header. If the header is from the MIME body, this value will be -1. The *field* parameter contains the name of the MIME header. The *value* parameter contains the header contents. The on_header event is fired when a header is parsed, which occurs for each header of the message when [decode_from_file](#decode_from_file-method-mime-struct), [decode_from_string](#decode_from_string-method-mime-struct), or decode_from_stream is called.

# on_progress event ([MIME](#struct-ipworkspgpmime) Struct)

This event shows the progress of decoding or encoding the input data.

The on_progress allows the user to visualize the progress of processing the input data.

The *percent_done* parameter shows what percentage of the input has been read.

# Config Settings ([MIME](#struct-ipworkspgpmime) Struct)

 The struct accepts one or more of the following *configuration settings*. Configuration settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the struct, access to these *internal properties* is provided through the [config](#config-method-mime-struct) method.

### MIME Config Settings

**DecodeMessageHeaders**: Instructs the component to automatically decode message headers.Message headers that have been Quoted-Printable or Base64 encoded are automatically decoded when this configuration setting is True. The default value of this setting is False.

**IncludeHeaders**: Tells the struct whether to include the headers when encoding the message.If True, the struct will include the headers when [encode_to_file](#encode_to_file-method-mime-struct) or [encode_to_string](#encode_to_string-method-mime-struct) are called. If False, only the message will be encoded.

The default value for [IncludeHeaders](#IncludeHeaders) is False.

**RequireVersionHeader**: Specifies whether or not the struct should require the version header.If True, the struct will require that the "MIME-Version" header be included in the message_headers. If the header is not present during decoding, the component fails with an error. This configuration setting is False by default.

**SanitizeFileName**: Whether invalid characters are replaced in MIME part filenames.If True, the struct will replace invalid characters with an underscore when decoding the MIME message. This applies to the filename held in the [part_file_name](#part_file_name-property-mime-struct) property. When True, the following characters are considered invalid:

- \
- /
- "
- :
- ?
- *
- <
- >
- |

 Any characters with ASCII values between 0 and 31 are also considered invalid. The default value is False.

**TempFilePath**: If set, the temporary files created during MIME decoding and encoding will be put in the path specified. The [TempFilePath](#TempFilePath) property sets the path at which the temporary files will be created.

**LicenseInfo**: Information about the current license.When queried, this setting will return a string containing information about the license this instance of a struct is using. It will return the following information:

- Product: The product the license is for.
- Product Key: The key the license was generated from.
- License Source: Where the license was found (e.g., RuntimeLicense, License File).
- License Type: The type of license installed (e.g., Royalty Free, Single Server).
- Last Valid Build: The last valid build number for which the license will work.

**MaskSensitiveData**: Whether sensitive data is masked in log messages.In certain circumstances it may be beneficial to mask sensitive data, like passwords, in log messages. Set this to *true* to mask sensitive data. The default is *true*.

**UseInternalSecurityAPI**: Whether or not to use the system security libraries or an internal implementation. When set to *false*, the struct will use the system security libraries by default to perform cryptographic functions where applicable.

Setting this configuration setting to *true* tells the struct to use the internal implementation instead of using the system security libraries.

 On Windows, this setting is set to *false* by default. On Linux/macOS, this setting is set to *true* by default.

 To use the system security libraries for Linux, OpenSSL support must be enabled. For more information on how to enable OpenSSL, please refer to the [OpenSSL Notes](platforms.md) section.
