# SysLog Class

The Syslog class is used to send and receive network system log packets.

## Syntax

```text
ipworks.SysLog
```

## Remarks

The Syslog class implements a lightweight BSD syslog client as specified in RFC 3164 (User Datagram Protocol [UDP]), RFC 5425 (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security [SSL/TLS]), and RFC 6587 (Transmission Control Protocol [TCP]). The class is used to send and receive BSD system network logging packets.

The first step in using the Syslog class is to set [LocalHost](#localhost-property-syslog-class) and [LocalPort](#localport-property-syslog-class) to the interface and port on which the host will be receiving syslog packets, and then call the [Activate](#activate-method-syslog-class) method. For each packet, the class will parse the headers and message and fire a [PacketIn](#packetin-event-syslog-class) event.

# Active Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This property indicates whether the class is active.

## Syntax

```text
public boolean isActive();
```

## Default Value

False

## Remarks

This property indicates whether the class is currently active and can send or receive data. Use the [Activate](#activate-method-syslog-class) and [Deactivate](#deactivate-method-syslog-class) methods to control whether the class is active.

This property is read-only and not available at design time.

# LocalHost Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

The name of the local host or user-assigned IP interface through which connections are initiated or accepted.

## Syntax

```text
public String getLocalHost();
public void setLocalHost(String localHost);
```

## Default Value

""

## Remarks

This property contains the name of the local host as obtained by the *gethostname()* system call, or if the user has assigned an IP address, the value of that address.

In multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface) setting LocalHost to the IP address of an interface will make the class initiate connections (or accept in the case of server classes) only through that interface. It is recommended to provide an IP address rather than a hostname when setting this property to ensure the desired interface is used.

If the class is connected, the LocalHost property shows the IP address of the interface through which the connection is made in internet dotted format (aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd). In most cases, this is the address of the local host, except for multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface).

NOTE: LocalHost is not persistent. You must always set it in code, and never in the property window.

# LocalPort Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This property indicates the port in the local host where Syslog binds.

## Syntax

```text
public int getLocalPort();
public void setLocalPort(int localPort);
```

## Default Value

514

## Remarks

The LocalPort property must be set before Syslog is activated. It instructs the class to bind to a specific port (or communication endpoint) in the local machine.

Setting it to *0* enables the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP stack to choose a port at random. The chosen port will be shown by the LocalPort property after the connection is established.

LocalPort cannot be changed once the class is [Active](#active-property-syslog-class). Any attempt to set the LocalPort property when the class is [Active](#active-property-syslog-class) will generate an error.

The LocalPort property is useful when trying to connect to services that require a trusted port in the client side.

# RemoteHost Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This property sets a specific host for outgoing log packets.

## Syntax

```text
public String getRemoteHost();
public void setRemoteHost(String remoteHost);
```

## Default Value

"255.255.255.255"

## Remarks

When a call is made to the [SendPacket](#sendpacket-method-syslog-class) method, the class will send it to whatever value is in RemoteHost. The default value is the broadcast address, "255.255.255.255".

# RemotePort Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This property sets a specific port for outgoing log packets.

## Syntax

```text
public int getRemotePort();
public void setRemotePort(int remotePort);
```

## Default Value

514

## Remarks

When a call is made to the [SendPacket](#sendpacket-method-syslog-class) method, the class will send to [RemoteHost](#remotehost-property-syslog-class) on RemotePort. The default value is 514, the standard port as defined in the BSD syslog RFC 3164.

# SSLAcceptServerCert Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

Instructs the class to unconditionally accept the server certificate that matches the supplied certificate.

## Syntax

```text
public Certificate getSSLAcceptServerCert();
public void setSSLAcceptServerCert(Certificate SSLAcceptServerCert);
```

## Remarks

If it finds any issues with the certificate presented by the server, the class will normally terminate the connection with an error.

You may override this behavior by supplying a value for SSLAcceptServerCert. If the certificate supplied in SSLAcceptServerCert is the same as the certificate presented by the server, then the server certificate is accepted unconditionally, and the connection will continue normally.

NOTE: This functionality is provided only for cases in which you otherwise know that you are communicating with the right server. If used improperly, this property may create a security breach. Use it at your own risk.

 Please refer to the [Certificate](#certificate-type) type for a complete list of fields.

# SSLAuthenticateClients Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

If set to True, the server asks the client(s) for a certificate.

## Syntax

```text
public boolean isSSLAuthenticateClients();
public void setSSLAuthenticateClients(boolean SSLAuthenticateClients);
```

## Default Value

False

## Remarks

This property is used in conjunction with the [SSLClientAuthentication](#sslclientauthentication-event-syslog-class) event. Please refer to the documentation of the [SSLClientAuthentication](#sslclientauthentication-event-syslog-class) event for details.

# SSLCert Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

The certificate to be used during Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) negotiation.

## Syntax

```text
public Certificate getSSLCert();
public void setSSLCert(Certificate SSLCert);
```

## Remarks

This property includes the digital certificate that the class will use during SSL negotiation. Set this property to a valid certificate before starting SSL negotiation. To set a certificate, you may set the [Encoded](#Certificate_f_Encoded) field to the encoded certificate. To select a certificate, use the store and subject fields.

 Please refer to the [Certificate](#certificate-type) type for a complete list of fields.

# SSLEnabled Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This property indicates whether Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (TLS/SSL) is enabled.

## Syntax

```text
public boolean isSSLEnabled();
public void setSSLEnabled(boolean SSLEnabled);
```

## Default Value

False

## Remarks

This setting specifies whether TLS/SSL is enabled in the class. When False (default), the class operates in plaintext mode. When True, TLS/SSL is enabled.

NOTE: TLS/SSL can be used only when [UseTCP](#usetcp-property-syslog-class) is *true*.

This property is not available at design time.

# SSLServerCert Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

The server certificate for the last established connection.

## Syntax

```text
public Certificate getSSLServerCert();
```

## Remarks

This property contains the server certificate for the last established connection.

SSLServerCert is reset every time a new connection is attempted.

This property is read-only.

 Please refer to the [Certificate](#certificate-type) type for a complete list of fields.

# UseTCP Property ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This property specifies whether Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is used.

## Syntax

```text
public boolean isUseTCP();
public void setUseTCP(boolean useTCP);
```

## Default Value

False

## Remarks

This property specifies whether TCP is used. By default, this property is False and UDP is used. When set to True, TCP will be used as the underlying protocol.

When set to True, the following additional settings are also applicable:

- [SSLAuthenticateClients](#sslauthenticateclients-property-syslog-class)
- [SSLEnabled](#sslenabled-property-syslog-class)
- [SSLAcceptServerCert](#sslacceptservercert-property-syslog-class)
- [SSLCert](#sslcert-property-syslog-class)
- [SSLServerCert](#sslservercert-property-syslog-class)
- [TCPMessageDelimiter](#TCPMessageDelimiter)

# Activate Method ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This method enables sending and receiving of data.

## Syntax

```text
public void activate();
```

## Remarks

This method enables sending and receiving of data. When called, the class will create a communication endpoint (socket) that can be used for sending and receiving User Datagram Protocol (UDP) messages. This method must be called before using the class to send and receive data.

If the [UseConnection](#UseConnection) configuration setting is set to *true*, then a local association (connection) to the remote host is also created.

# Config Method ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

Sets or retrieves a configuration setting.

## Syntax

```text
public String config(String configurationString);
```

## Remarks

Config is a generic method available in every class. It is used to set and retrieve [configuration settings](#config-settings-syslog-class) for the class.

These settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the class, access to these *internal properties* is provided through the Config method.

To set a configuration setting named *PROPERTY*, you must call *Config("PROPERTY=VALUE")*, where *VALUE* is the value of the setting expressed as a string. For boolean values, use the strings "True", "False", "0", "1", "Yes", or "No" (case does not matter).

To read (query) the value of a [configuration setting](#config-settings-syslog-class), you must call *Config("PROPERTY")*. The value will be returned as a string.

# Deactivate Method ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This method disables sending and receive of data.

## Syntax

```text
public void deactivate();
```

## Remarks

This method disables sending and receiving of data. When called, the class will destroy the existing socket and disable data communications.

# DoEvents Method ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This method processes events from the internal message queue.

## Syntax

```text
public void doEvents();
```

## Remarks

When DoEvents is called, the class processes any available events. If no events are available, it waits for a preset period of time, and then returns.

# Reset Method ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This method will reset the class.

## Syntax

```text
public void reset();
```

## Remarks

This method will reset the class's properties to their default values.

# ResolveRemoteHost Method ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This method resolves the hostname in RemoteHost to an IP address.

## Syntax

```text
public void resolveRemoteHost();
```

## Remarks

This method resolves the hostname specified by [RemoteHost](#remotehost-property-syslog-class) to an IP address. The resolved value is available in the [RemoteHost](#remotehost-property-syslog-class) property after this method returns.

In most cases, calling this method is not necessary; the class will resolve the hostname automatically when needed. If [DelayHostResolution](#DelayHostResolution) is *true*, this method may be called to manually resolve [RemoteHost](#remotehost-property-syslog-class), if desired.

# SendPacket Method ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This method sends a log packet to RemoteHost .

## Syntax

```text
public void sendPacket(int facility, int severity, String message);
```

## Remarks

System log packets are composed of three main sections, each of which can be broken down into two smaller pieces.

The first section is the PRI, which contains the originating *Facility* and *Severity* of the *Message*. *Facility* is a value from 0 to 23, with each value being a different part of the system:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 | Kernel messages |
| 1 | User-level messages |
| 2 | Mail system |
| 3 | System daemons |
| 4 | Security/authorization messages |
| 5 | Messages generated internally by syslogd |
| 6 | Line printer subsystem |
| 7 | Network news subsystem |
| 8 | UUCP subsystem |
| 9 | Clock daemon |
| 10 | Security/authorization messages |
| 11 | FTP daemon |
| 12 | NTP subsystem |
| 13 | Log audit |
| 14 | Log alert |
| 15 | Clock daemon |
| 16 | Local use |
| 17 | Local use |
| 18 | Local use |
| 19 | Local use |
| 20 | Local use |
| 21 | Local use |
| 22 | Local use |
| 23 | Local use |

*Severity* is a value from 0 to 7 using the following convention:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 | Emergency - the system is unusable |
| 1 | Alert - action must be taken immediately |
| 2 | Critical - critical conditions exist |
| 3 | Error - error conditions exist |
| 4 | Warning - warning conditions exist |
| 5 | Notice - normal but significant condition |
| 6 | Informational - informative message |
| 7 | Debug - debug-level messages |

The second section contains a timestamp and hostname, both of which are automatically generated by the class. The third section is the *Message*.

# Connected Event ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This event is fired immediately after a connection completes (or fails).

## Syntax

```text
public class DefaultSysLogEventListener implements SysLogEventListener {
  ...
  public void connected(SysLogConnectedEvent e) {}
  ...
}
public class SysLogConnectedEvent {
  public String remoteAddress;
  public int remotePort;
  public int statusCode;
  public String description;
}
```

## Remarks

This event fires after a connection completes or fails.

*StatusCode* is the value returned by the system Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP stack. This will be *0* if the connection was successful.

*Description* contains a human readable description of the status. This will be *OK* if the connection was successful.

*RemoteAddress* is the IP address of the remote host.

*RemotePort* is the port on the remote host.

# ConnectionStatus Event ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This event is fired to indicate changes in a connection state.

## Syntax

```text
public class DefaultSysLogEventListener implements SysLogEventListener {
  ...
  public void connectionStatus(SysLogConnectionStatusEvent e) {}
  ...
}
public class SysLogConnectionStatusEvent {
  public String connectionEvent;
  public int statusCode;
  public String description;
}
```

## Remarks

The ConnectionStatus event is fired when the connection state changes: for example, upon completion of a firewall or proxy connection or completion of a security handshake.

The *ConnectionEvent* parameter indicates the type of connection event. Values may include the following:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
|  | Firewall connection complete. |
| | Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or S/Shell handshake complete (where applicable). |
|  | Remote host connection complete. |
|  | Remote host disconnected. |
|  | SSL or S/Shell connection broken. |
|  | Firewall host disconnected. |

 *StatusCode* has the error code returned by the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP stack. *Description* contains a description of this code. The value of *StatusCode* is equal to the value of the error.

# Disconnected Event ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This event is fired when a connection is closed.

## Syntax

```text
public class DefaultSysLogEventListener implements SysLogEventListener {
  ...
  public void disconnected(SysLogDisconnectedEvent e) {}
  ...
}
public class SysLogDisconnectedEvent {
  public String remoteAddress;
  public int remotePort;
  public int statusCode;
  public String description;
}
```

## Remarks

This event fires when a connection is closed.

# Error Event ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

Fired when information is available about errors during data delivery.

## Syntax

```text
public class DefaultSysLogEventListener implements SysLogEventListener {
  ...
  public void error(SysLogErrorEvent e) {}
  ...
}
public class SysLogErrorEvent {
  public int errorCode;
  public String description;
}
```

## Remarks

The Error event is fired in case of exceptional conditions during message processing. Normally the class throws an exception.

The *ErrorCode* parameter contains an error code, and the *Description* parameter contains a textual description of the error. For a list of valid error codes and their descriptions, please refer to the [Error Codes](#trappable-errors-syslog-class) section.

# PacketIn Event ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This event fires whenever a system log packet is received.

## Syntax

```text
public class DefaultSysLogEventListener implements SysLogEventListener {
  ...
  public void packetIn(SysLogPacketInEvent e) {}
  ...
}
public class SysLogPacketInEvent {
  public int facilityCode;
  public String facility;
  public int severityCode;
  public String severity;
  public String timestamp;
  public String hostname;
  public String message;
  public boolean conforms;
  public byte[] packet;
  public String sourceAddress;
  public int sourcePort;
}
```

## Remarks

System log packets are composed of three main sections, each of which can be broken down into two smaller pieces.

The first section is the PRI, which contains the originating *FacilityCode* and *SeverityCode* of the *Message*. *FacilityCode* is a value from 0 to 23, with each value being a different part of the system. *Facility* is a string representation of *FacilityCode* based on the following convention:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 | Kernel messages |
| 1 | User-level messages |
| 2 | Mail system |
| 3 | System daemons |
| 4 | Security/authorization messages |
| 5 | Messages generated internally by syslogd |
| 6 | Line printer subsystem |
| 7 | Network news subsystem |
| 8 | UUCP subsystem |
| 9 | Clock daemon |
| 10 | Security/authorization messages |
| 11 | FTP daemon |
| 12 | NTP subsystem |
| 13 | Log audit |
| 14 | Log alert |
| 15 | Clock daemon |
| 16 | Local use |
| 17 | Local use |
| 18 | Local use |
| 19 | Local use |
| 20 | Local use |
| 21 | Local use |
| 22 | Local use |
| 23 | Local use |

 *SeverityCode* is a value from 0 to 7. *Severity* is a string representation of *SeverityCode* using the following convention:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 | Emergency - the system is unusable. |
| 1 | Alert - action must be taken immediately. |
| 2 | Critical - critical conditions exist. |
| 3 | Error - error conditions exist. |
| 4 | Warning - warning conditions exist. |
| 5 | Notice - normal but significant condition. |
| 6 | Informational - informative message. |
| 7 | Debug - debug-level messages. |

The second section contains the *Timestamp* and *Hostname*. Timestamp is a string that should conform to the standard structure "MMM DD, HH:MM:SS". The class will search for the *Timestamp* and verify that it conforms. If it conforms, the class will set *Hostname*, otherwise, everything after the PRI will be placed in *Message*.

If *Conforms* is True, then the original syslog packet conforms to the syslog RFC and *Timestamp*, *Hostname*, and *Message* will all have valid values. Otherwise, you should parse the contents of *Packet* to verify the fields manually.

*SourceAddress* and *SourcePort* are the address and port from which *Packet* was sent. This can be an intermediate syslog server that is simply forwarding packets from the original host.

# SSLClientAuthentication Event ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This is event fired when the client presents its credentials to the server.

## Syntax

```text
public class DefaultSysLogEventListener implements SysLogEventListener {
  ...
  public void SSLClientAuthentication(SysLogSSLClientAuthenticationEvent e) {}
  ...
}
public class SysLogSSLClientAuthenticationEvent {
  public String remoteAddress;
  public int remotePort;
  public byte[] certEncoded;
  public String certSubject;
  public String certIssuer;
  public String status;
  public boolean accept; //read-write
}
```

## Remarks

This event fires when a client connects to the class and presents a certificate for authentication. The *Accept* parameter is a recommendation on whether to continue or close the connection. This is just a suggestion: application software must use its own logic to determine whether or not to continue.

When *Accept* is False, *Status* shows why the verification failed (otherwise, *Status* contains the string "OK").

*RemoteAddress* is the IP address of the connecting client.

*RemotePort* is the source port of the connecting client.

*CertEncoded* is the base64-encoded certificate presented by the client.

*CertSubject* is the subject of the certificate presented by the client.

*CertIssuer* is the subject of the issuer of the certificate presented by the client.

*Status* is the status of the certificate.

*Accept* defines whether the certificate is accepted.

# SSLServerAuthentication Event ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)

This event fires when connecting to the server.

## Syntax

```text
public class DefaultSysLogEventListener implements SysLogEventListener {
  ...
  public void SSLServerAuthentication(SysLogSSLServerAuthenticationEvent e) {}
  ...
}
public class SysLogSSLServerAuthenticationEvent {
  public String remoteAddress;
  public int remotePort;
  public byte[] certEncoded;
  public String certSubject;
  public String certIssuer;
  public String status;
  public boolean accept; //read-write
}
```

## Remarks

During this event, the client can decide whether or not to continue with the connection process. The *Accept* parameter is a recommendation on whether to continue or close the connection. This is just a suggestion: application software must use its own logic to determine whether or not to continue.

When *Accept* is False, *Status* shows why the verification failed (otherwise, *Status* contains the string *OK*). If it is decided to continue, you can override and accept the certificate by setting the *Accept* parameter to True.

*RemoteAddress* is the IP address of the server.

*RemotePort* is the source port of the server.

*CertEncoded* is the base64-encoded certificate presented by the server.

*CertSubject* is the subject of the certificate presented by the server.

*CertIssuer* is the subject of the issuer of the certificate presented by the server.

*Status* is the status of the certificate.

*Accept* defines whether the certificate is accepted.

 **KeyPassword** *String*
*Default Value: ""*

The password for the certificate's private key (if any).

Some certificate stores may individually protect certificates' private keys, separate from the standard protection offered by the [StorePassword](#Certificate_f_StorePassword). This field can be used to read such password-protected private keys.

NOTE: This property defaults to the value of [StorePassword](#Certificate_f_StorePassword). To clear it, you must set the property to the empty string (""). It can be set at any time, but when the private key's password is different from the store's password, then it must be set before calling [PrivateKey](#Certificate_f_PrivateKey).

 **PrivateKey** *String (read-only)*
*Default Value: ""*

The private key of the certificate (if available). The key is provided as PEM/Base64-encoded data.

NOTE: The [PrivateKey](#Certificate_f_PrivateKey) may be available but not exportable. In this case, [PrivateKey](#Certificate_f_PrivateKey) returns an empty string.

 **PrivateKeyAvailable** *boolean (read-only)*
*Default Value: False*

Whether a [PrivateKey](#Certificate_f_PrivateKey) is available for the selected certificate. If [PrivateKeyAvailable](#Certificate_f_PrivateKeyAvailable) is True, the certificate may be used for authentication purposes (e.g., server authentication).

 **SignatureAlgorithm** *String (read-only)*
*Default Value: ""*

The text description of the certificate's signature algorithm. The property contains either the name of the algorithm (e.g., "RSA" or "RSA_MD5RSA") or an object identifier (OID) string representing the algorithm.

 **Store** *String*
*Default Value: "MY"*

The name of the certificate store for the client certificate.

The [StoreType](#Certificate_f_StoreType) field denotes the type of the certificate store specified by [Store](#Certificate_f_Store). If the store is password-protected, specify the password in [StorePassword](#Certificate_f_StorePassword).

[Store](#Certificate_f_Store) is used in conjunction with the [Subject](#Certificate_f_Subject) field to specify client certificates. If [Store](#Certificate_f_Store) has a value, and [Subject](#Certificate_f_Subject) or [Encoded](#Certificate_f_Encoded) is set, a search for a certificate is initiated. Please see the [Subject](#Certificate_f_Subject) field for details.

 Designations of certificate stores are platform dependent.

The following designations are the most common User and Machine certificate stores in Windows:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| MY | A certificate store holding personal certificates with their associated private keys. |
| CA | Certifying authority certificates. |
| ROOT | Root certificates. |

In Java, the certificate store normally is a file containing certificates and optional private keys.

When the certificate store type is *cstPFXFile*, this property must be set to the name of the file. When the type is *cstPFXBlob*, the property must be set to the binary contents of a PFX file (i.e., PKCS#12 certificate store).

 **StoreB** *byte[]*

|  |  |

                               @"C:\Program Files\OpenSC Project\OpenSC\pkcs11\opensc-pkcs11.dll",
                               "123456", // PIN
                               "CN=cert_subject");
sftp.SSHUser = "test";
sftp.SSHLogon("myhost", 22);
```
```csharp
certmgr.CertStoreType = CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11;
certmgr.OnCertList += (s, e) => {
  secKeyBlob = e.CertEncoded;
};
certmgr.CertStore = @"C:\Program Files\OpenSC Project\OpenSC\pkcs11\opensc-pkcs11.dll";
certmgr.CertStorePassword = "123456"; // PIN
certmgr.ListStoreCertificates();

sftp.SSHCert = new Certificate(CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11, secKeyBlob, "123456", "*");
sftp.SSHUser = "test";
sftp.SSHLogon("myhost", 22);
```
Code Example. SSH Authentication with Security Key (without CertMgr): Alternatively, collect the necessary data using the [CertMgr](CertMgr.md#CertMgr) class by calling the [ListStoreCertificates](CertMgr.md#CertMgr_m_ListStoreCertificates) method after setting the corresponding properties accordingly. The certificate information returned in the [CertList](CertMgr.md#CertMgr_e_CertList) event's CertEncoded parameter may be saved for later use. When using a certificate obtained with this approach, pass the previously saved security key information as the [Store](#Certificate_f_Store) and set [StorePassword](#Certificate_f_StorePassword) to the PIN. Code Example. SSH Authentication with Security Key (with CertMgr): |
| 99 (cstAuto) | The store type is automatically detected from the input data. This setting may be used with both public and private keys and can detect any of the supported formats automatically. |
 **Subject** *String*
*Default Value: ""*
The subject of the certificate used for client authentication.
This field will be populated with the full subject of the loaded certificate. When loading a certificate, the subject is used to locate the certificate in the store.
If an exact match is not found, the store is searched for subjects containing the value of the property.
If a match is still not found, the property is set to an empty string, and no certificate is selected.
The special value "*" picks a random certificate in the certificate store.
The certificate subject is a comma-separated list of distinguished name fields and values. For instance, "CN=www.server.com, OU=test, C=US, E=example@email.com". Common fields and their meanings are as follows:
*Default Value: ""*
The certificate (PEM/Base64 encoded). This field is used to assign a specific certificate. The [Store](#Certificate_f_Store) and [Subject](#Certificate_f_Subject) fields also may be used to specify a certificate.
When [Encoded](#Certificate_f_Encoded) is set, a search is initiated in the current [Store](#Certificate_f_Store) for the private key of the certificate. If the key is found, [Subject](#Certificate_f_Subject) is updated to reflect the full subject of the selected certificate; otherwise, [Subject](#Certificate_f_Subject) is set to an empty string.
## Constructors
```text
public Certificate();
```
 Creates a instance whose properties can be set.
```text
public Certificate(String certificateFile);
```
 Opens * CertificateFile * and reads out the contents as an X.509 public key.
```text
public Certificate(byte[] encoded);
```
 Parses * Encoded * as an X.509 public key.
```text
public Certificate(int storeType, String store, String storePassword, String subject);
```
 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a file containing the certificate store. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.
 After the store has been successfully opened, the class will attempt to find the certificate identified by * Subject * . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN). The * Subject * parameter can also take an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load in a "Thumbprint=value" format.
```text
public Certificate(int storeType, String store, String storePassword, String subject, String configurationString);
```
 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a file containing the certificate store. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.
 * ConfigurationString * is a newline-separated list of name-value pairs that may be used to modify the default behavior. Possible values include "PersistPFXKey", which shows whether or not the PFX key is persisted after performing operations with the private key. This correlates to the PKCS12_NO_PERSIST_KEY CryptoAPI option. The default value is True (the key is persisted). "Thumbprint" - an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load. When specified, this value is used to select the certificate in the store. This is applicable to the * cstUser * , * cstMachine * , * cstPublicKeyFile * , and * cstPFXFile * store types. "UseInternalSecurityAPI" shows whether the platform (default) or the internal security API is used when performing certificate-related operations.
 After the store has been successfully opened, the class will attempt to find the certificate identified by * Subject * . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN). The * Subject * parameter can also take an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load in a "Thumbprint=value" format.
```text
public Certificate(int storeType, String store, String storePassword, byte[] encoded);
```
 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a file containing the certificate store. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.
 After the store has been successfully opened, the class will load * Encoded * as an X.509 certificate and search the opened store for a corresponding private key.
```text
public Certificate(int storeType, byte[] store, String storePassword, String subject);
```
 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a byte array containing the certificate data. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.
 After the store has been successfully opened, the class will attempt to find the certificate identified by * Subject * . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN). The * Subject * parameter can also take an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load in a "Thumbprint=value" format.
```text
public Certificate(int storeType, byte[] store, String storePassword, String subject, String configurationString);
```
 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a byte array containing the certificate data. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.
 After the store has been successfully opened, the class will attempt to find the certificate identified by * Subject * . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN). The * Subject * parameter can also take an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load in a "Thumbprint=value" format.
```text
public Certificate(int storeType, byte[] store, String storePassword, byte[] encoded);
```
 * StoreType * identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. * Store * is a byte array containing the certificate data. * StorePassword * is the password used to protect the store.
 After the store has been successfully opened, the class will load * Encoded * as an X.509 certificate and search the opened store for a corresponding private key.
# Config Settings ([SysLog](#syslog-class) Class)
 The class accepts one or more of the following *configuration settings*. Configuration settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the class, access to these *internal properties* is provided through the [Config](#config-method-syslog-class) method.
### Syslog Config Settings
NOTE: This configuration setting is applicable only when [Version](#Version) is set to *1* (RFC 5424)
The following example demonstrates how to set the Struct-Data configs:
```csharp
  syslog.Config("SDElementCount=2");
  syslog.Config("SDElementIndex=0");
  syslog.Config("SDElementID=examplePriority@32473");

  syslog.Config("SDParamValue[0]=3");
  syslog.Config("SDParamName[1]=eventSource");
  syslog.Config("SDParamValue[1]=Application");
```
**TCPLocalPort**: The local port to use when sending data over TCP.When using Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) the class will listen for incoming data on the specified [LocalPort](#localport-property-syslog-class). When sending data a separate TCP connection is established from the local host to the remote host. The local port used for this connection is defined by this setting. If set to *0* (default) the system chooses an available port. If set to any other value, the class will use the specified port.
This setting should be set only when there is a particular reason to do so.
NOTE: This setting is applicable only in JDK versions 1.7 or higher. In earlier JDK versions, the [LocalPort](#localport-property-syslog-class) is permitted to be shared between the listening and sending socket (later JDK versions do not allow this).
**TCPMessageDelimiter**: The message delimiter to use (if any) when sending and receiving over TCP.When [UseTCP](#usetcp-property-syslog-class) is set to True, messages may be sent and received using either Octet Counting or Non-Transparent-Framing schemes to separate messages sent over the wire. This setting defines the delimiter to use in the Non-Transparent-Framing scheme when sending messages. Possible values are as follows:
|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 (None - Default) | Octet Counting is used, there is no delimiter character |
| 1 (Cr) | The carriage return character is used as a message delimiter |
| 2 (Lf) | The line feed character is used as a message delimiter |
| 3 (CrLf) | The two character carriage return line feed sequence is used as a message delimiter |
| 4 (Null) | A single null byte is used as a message delimiter |
This configuration setting is applicable only when sending a message and [UseTCP](#usetcp-property-syslog-class) is set to True.
**UseHostname**: Determines if the local host name or IP address is used in the Syslog header. If set to False, the class will use the IP address of the local host name in the header of the Syslog packet. The default value is True.
**UseLocalTime**: Indicates whether to use local time or GMT time for packet timestamps.Setting this to True will generate timestamps based on the time in your locality, taking into account your time zone. When this option is False (default), GMT timestamps are generated.
**Version**: Determines which Syslog version to use.
|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 (RFC 3164 - Default) | Uses RFC 3164 |
| 1 (RFC 5424) | Uses RFC 5424 |
 This configuration setting specifies which version of Syslog will be used.
NOTE: This configuration setting should be set before setting any of the [AppName](#AppName), [MsgId](#MsgId), [ProcId](#ProcId)
### UDP Config Settings
**CaptureIPPacketInfo**: Used to capture the packet information.If this is set to True, the component will capture the IP packet information.
The default value for this setting is False.
NOTE: This configuration setting is available only in Windows.
**DelayHostResolution**: Whether the hostname is resolved when RemoteHost is set.This configuration setting specifies whether a hostname is resolved immediately when [RemoteHost](#remotehost-property-syslog-class) is set. If *true* the class will resolve the hostname and the IP address will be present in the [RemoteHost](#remotehost-property-syslog-class) property. If *false*, the hostname is not resolved until needed by the component when a method to connect or send data is called. If desired, [ResolveRemoteHost](#resolveremotehost-method-syslog-class) may be called to manually resolve the value in [RemoteHost](#remotehost-property-syslog-class) at any time.
The default value is *false*.
**DestinationAddress**: Used to get the destination address from the packet information.If [CaptureIPPacketInfo](#CaptureIPPacketInfo) is set to True, then this will be populated with the packet's destination address when a packet is received. This information will be accessible in the DataIn event.
NOTE: This configuration setting is available only in Windows.
**DontFragment**: Used to set the Don't Fragment flag of outgoing packets.When set to True, packets sent by the class will have the Don't Fragment flag set. The default value is False.
**LocalHost**: The name of the local host through which connections are initiated or accepted. The [LocalHost](#localhost-property-syslog-class) setting contains the name of the local host as obtained by the *gethostname()* system call, or if the user has assigned an IP address, the value of that address.
In multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface), setting LocalHost to the value of an interface will make the class initiate connections (or accept in the case of server classes) only through that interface.
If the class is connected, the [LocalHost](#localhost-property-syslog-class) setting shows the IP address of the interface through which the connection is made in internet dotted format (aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd). In most cases, this is the address of the local host, except for multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface).
**LocalPort**: The port in the local host where the class binds. This configuration setting must be set before a connection is attempted. It instructs the class to bind to a specific port (or communication endpoint) in the local machine.
Setting this to 0 (default) enables the system to choose a port at random. The chosen port will be shown by [LocalPort](#localport-property-syslog-class) after the connection is established.
[LocalPort](#localport-property-syslog-class) cannot be changed once a connection is made. Any attempt to set this when a connection is active will generate an error.
This configuration setting is useful when trying to connect to services that require a trusted port on the client side. An example is the remote shell (rsh) service in UNIX systems.
**MaxPacketSize**: The maximum length of the packets that can be received.This configuration setting specifies the maximum size of the datagrams that the class will accept without truncation.
**QOSDSCPValue**: Used to specify an arbitrary QOS/DSCP setting (optional).[UseConnection](#UseConnection) must be True to use this configuration setting. This option allows you to specify an arbitrary DSCP value between 0 and 63. The default is 0. When set to the default value, the component will not set a DSCP value.
NOTE: This configuration setting uses the qWAVE API and is available only on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and later.
**QOSTrafficType**: Used to specify QOS/DSCP settings (optional).[UseConnection](#UseConnection) must be True to use this setting. You may specify either the text or integer values: BestEffort (0), Background (1), ExcellentEffort (2), AudioVideo (3), Voice (4), and Control (5).
NOTE: This configuration setting uses the qWAVE API and is available only on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 or above.
NOTE: QOSTrafficType must be set before setting [Active](#active-property-syslog-class) to True.
**ShareLocalPort**: If set to True, allows more than one instance of the class to be active on the same local port.This option must be set before the class is activated through the [Active](#active-property-syslog-class) property or it will have no effect.
The default value for this setting is False.
**UseConnection**: Determines whether to use a connected socket.[UseConnection](#UseConnection) specifies whether or not the class should use a connected socket. The connection is defined as an association in between the local address/port and the remote address/port. As such, this is not a connection in the traditional Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) sense. It means only that the class will send and receive data to and from the specified destination.
The default value for this setting is False.
**UseIPv6**: Whether or not to use IPv6.By default, the component expects an IPv4 address for local and remote host properties, and it will create an IPv4 socket. To use IPv6 instead, set this to True.
### Socket Config Settings
**AbsoluteTimeout**: Determines whether timeouts are inactivity timeouts or absolute timeouts.If [AbsoluteTimeout](#AbsoluteTimeout) is set to True, any method that does not complete within Timeout seconds will be aborted. By default, *AbsoluteTimeout* is False, and the timeout is an inactivity timeout.
NOTE: This option is not valid for User Datagram Protocol (UDP) ports.
**FirewallData**: Used to send extra data to the firewall.When the firewall is a tunneling proxy, use this property to send custom (additional) headers to the firewall (e.g., headers for custom authentication schemes).
**InBufferSize**: The size in bytes of the incoming queue of the socket.This is the size of an internal queue in the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP stack. You can increase or decrease its size depending on the amount of data that you will be receiving. In some cases, increasing the value of the *InBufferSize* setting can provide significant improvements in performance.
Some TCP/IP implementations do not support variable buffer sizes. If that is the case, when the class is activated the *InBufferSize* reverts to its defined size. The same happens if you attempt to make it too large or too small.
**OutBufferSize**: The size in bytes of the outgoing queue of the socket.This is the size of an internal queue in the TCP/IP stack. You can increase or decrease its size depending on the amount of data that you will be sending. In some cases, increasing the value of the *OutBufferSize* setting can provide significant improvements in performance.
Some TCP/IP implementations do not support variable buffer sizes. If that is the case, when the class is activated the *OutBufferSize* reverts to its defined size. The same happens if you attempt to make it too large or too small.
### Base Config Settings
**BuildInfo**: Information about the product's build.When queried, this setting will return a string containing information about the product's build.
**GUIAvailable**: Whether or not a message loop is available for processing events.In a GUI-based application, long-running blocking operations may cause the application to stop responding to input until the operation returns. The class will attempt to discover whether or not the application has a message loop and, if one is discovered, it will process events in that message loop during any such blocking operation.
In some non-GUI applications, an invalid message loop may be discovered that will result in errant behavior. In these cases, setting [GUIAvailable](#GUIAvailable) to *false* will ensure that the class does not attempt to process external events.
**LicenseInfo**: Information about the current license.When queried, this setting will return a string containing information about the license this instance of a class is using. It will return the following information:
- Product: The product the license is for.
- Product Key: The key the license was generated from.
- License Source: Where the license was found (e.g., RuntimeLicense, License File).
- License Type: The type of license installed (e.g., Royalty Free, Single Server).
- Last Valid Build: The last valid build number for which the license will work.
**MaskSensitiveData**: Whether sensitive data is masked in log messages.In certain circumstances it may be beneficial to mask sensitive data, like passwords, in log messages. Set this to *true* to mask sensitive data. The default is *true*.
**UseDaemonThreads**: Whether threads created by the class are daemon threads.If set to True (default), when the class creates a thread, the thread's Daemon property will be explicitly set to True. When set to False, the class will not set the Daemon property on the created thread. The default value is True.
**UseInternalSecurityAPI**: Whether or not to use the system security libraries or an internal implementation. When set to *false*, the class will use the system security libraries by default to perform cryptographic functions where applicable.
Setting this configuration setting to *true* tells the class to use the internal implementation instead of using the system security libraries.
 This setting is set to *false* by default on all platforms.
**UseVirtualThreads**: Whether threads created by the class use virtual threads instead of platform threads.If set to *true*, when the class creates a thread, it will be created as a virtual thread instead of a platform thread. Virtual threads are lightweight threads managed by the JVM that are multiplexed onto a small pool of carrier threads, significantly reducing memory usage and platform thread count under high-concurrency workloads. Requires Java 24 or later. The default value is *false*.
