# Struct ipworks::SysLog

The Syslog struct is used to send and receive network system log packets.

## Syntax

```text
ipworks::SysLog
```

## Remarks

The Syslog struct implements a lightweight BSD syslog client as specified in RFC 3164 (User Datagram Protocol [UDP]), RFC 5425 (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security [SSL/TLS]), and RFC 6587 (Transmission Control Protocol [TCP]). The struct is used to send and receive BSD system network logging packets.

The first step in using the Syslog struct is to set [local_host](#local_host-property-syslog-struct) and [local_port](#local_port-property-syslog-struct) to the interface and port on which the host will be receiving syslog packets, and then call the [activate](#activate-method-syslog-struct) method. For each packet, the struct will parse the headers and message and fire a [on_packet_in](#on_packet_in-event-syslog-struct) event.

### Object Lifetime

 The *new()* method returns a mutable reference to a struct instance. The object itself is kept in the global list maintained by IPWorks. Due to this, the SysLog struct cannot be disposed of automatically. Please, call the *dispose(&mut; self)* method of SysLog when you have finished using the instance.

# active property ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This property indicates whether the struct is active.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn active(&self ) -> Result<bool, IPWorksError>
```

## Default Value

false

## Remarks

This property indicates whether the struct is currently active and can send or receive data. Use the [activate](#activate-method-syslog-struct) and [deactivate](#deactivate-method-syslog-struct) methods to control whether the struct is active.

This property is read-only.

## Data Type

bool

# local_host property ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

The name of the local host or user-assigned IP interface through which connections are initiated or accepted.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn local_host(&self ) -> Result<String, IPWorksError> fn set_local_host(&self, value : &str) ->  Option<IPWorksError>
fn set_local_host_ref(&self, value : &String) ->  Option<IPWorksError>
```

## Default Value

""

## Remarks

This property contains the name of the local host as obtained by the *gethostname()* system call, or if the user has assigned an IP address, the value of that address.

In multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface) setting LocalHost to the IP address of an interface will make the struct initiate connections (or accept in the case of server structs) only through that interface. It is recommended to provide an IP address rather than a hostname when setting this property to ensure the desired interface is used.

If the struct is connected, the local_host property shows the IP address of the interface through which the connection is made in internet dotted format (aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd). In most cases, this is the address of the local host, except for multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface).

NOTE: local_host is not persistent. You must always set it in code, and never in the property window.

## Data Type

String

# local_port property ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This property indicates the port in the local host where Syslog binds.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn local_port(&self ) -> Result<i32, IPWorksError> fn set_local_port(&self, value : i32) ->  Option<IPWorksError>
```

## Default Value

514

## Remarks

The local_port property must be set before Syslog is activated. It instructs the struct to bind to a specific port (or communication endpoint) in the local machine.

Setting it to *0* enables the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP stack to choose a port at random. The chosen port will be shown by the local_port property after the connection is established.

local_port cannot be changed once the struct is [active](#active-property-syslog-struct). Any attempt to set the local_port property when the struct is [active](#active-property-syslog-struct) will generate an error.

The local_port property is useful when trying to connect to services that require a trusted port in the client side.

## Data Type

i32

# remote_host property ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This property sets a specific host for outgoing log packets.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn set_remote_host_ref(&self, value : &String) ->  Option<IPWorksError>
```

## Default Value

"255.255.255.255"

## Remarks

When a call is made to the [send_packet](#send_packet-method-syslog-struct) method, the struct will send it to whatever value is in remote_host. The default value is the broadcast address, "255.255.255.255".

## Data Type

String

# remote_port property ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This property sets a specific port for outgoing log packets.

## Syntax

```
## Default Value
514
## Remarks
When a call is made to the [send_packet](#send_packet-method-syslog-struct) method, the struct will send to [remote_host](#remote_host-property-syslog-struct) on remote_port. The default value is 514, the standard port as defined in the BSD syslog RFC 3164.
 The struct supports both public and private keys in a variety of formats. When the *cstAuto* value is used, the struct will automatically determine the type. This property can take one of the following values:
```csharp
sftp.SSHCert = new Certificate(CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11,
                               @"C:\Program Files\OpenSC Project\OpenSC\pkcs11\opensc-pkcs11.dll",
                               "123456", // PIN
                               "CN=cert_subject");
sftp.SSHUser = "test";
sftp.SSHLogon("myhost", 22);
```
```csharp
certmgr.CertStoreType = CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11;
certmgr.OnCertList += (s, e) => {
  secKeyBlob = e.CertEncoded;
};
certmgr.CertStore = @"C:\Program Files\OpenSC Project\OpenSC\pkcs11\opensc-pkcs11.dll";
certmgr.CertStorePassword = "123456"; // PIN
certmgr.ListStoreCertificates();

sftp.SSHCert = new Certificate(CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11, secKeyBlob, "123456", "*");
sftp.SSHUser = "test";
sftp.SSHLogon("myhost", 22);
```
Code Example. SSH Authentication with Security Key (without CertMgr): Alternatively, collect the necessary data using the [CertMgr](#CertMgr) struct by calling the [list_store_certificates](#CertMgr_m_ListStoreCertificates) method after setting the corresponding properties accordingly. The certificate information returned in the [on_cert_list](#CertMgr_e_CertList) event's CertEncoded parameter may be saved for later use. When using a certificate obtained with this approach, pass the previously saved security key information as the [ssl_accept_server_cert_store](#ssl_accept_server_cert_store-property-syslog-struct) and set [ssl_accept_server_cert_store_password](#ssl_accept_server_cert_store_password-property-syslog-struct) to the PIN. Code Example. SSH Authentication with Security Key (with CertMgr): |
| 99 (cstAuto) | The store type is automatically detected from the input data. This setting may be used with both public and private keys and can detect any of the supported formats automatically. |
## Remarks
The type of certificate store for this certificate.
 The struct supports both public and private keys in a variety of formats. When the *cstAuto* value is used, the struct will automatically determine the type. This property can take one of the following values:
```csharp
sftp.SSHCert = new Certificate(CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11,
                               @"C:\Program Files\OpenSC Project\OpenSC\pkcs11\opensc-pkcs11.dll",
                               "123456", // PIN
                               "CN=cert_subject");
sftp.SSHUser = "test";
sftp.SSHLogon("myhost", 22);
```
```csharp
certmgr.CertStoreType = CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11;
certmgr.OnCertList += (s, e) => {
  secKeyBlob = e.CertEncoded;
};
certmgr.CertStore = @"C:\Program Files\OpenSC Project\OpenSC\pkcs11\opensc-pkcs11.dll";
certmgr.CertStorePassword = "123456"; // PIN
certmgr.ListStoreCertificates();

sftp.SSHCert = new Certificate(CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11, secKeyBlob, "123456", "*");
sftp.SSHUser = "test";
sftp.SSHLogon("myhost", 22);
```
Code Example. SSH Authentication with Security Key (without CertMgr): Alternatively, collect the necessary data using the [CertMgr](#CertMgr) struct by calling the [list_store_certificates](#CertMgr_m_ListStoreCertificates) method after setting the corresponding properties accordingly. The certificate information returned in the [on_cert_list](#CertMgr_e_CertList) event's CertEncoded parameter may be saved for later use. When using a certificate obtained with this approach, pass the previously saved security key information as the [ssl_cert_store](#ssl_cert_store-property-syslog-struct) and set [ssl_cert_store_password](#ssl_cert_store_password-property-syslog-struct) to the PIN. Code Example. SSH Authentication with Security Key (with CertMgr): |
| 99 (cstAuto) | The store type is automatically detected from the input data. This setting may be used with both public and private keys and can detect any of the supported formats automatically. |
The [ssl_server_cert_store_type](#ssl_server_cert_store_type-property-syslog-struct) property denotes the type of the certificate store specified by [ssl_server_cert_store](#ssl_server_cert_store-property-syslog-struct). If the store is password-protected, specify the password in [ssl_server_cert_store_password](#ssl_server_cert_store_password-property-syslog-struct).
[ssl_server_cert_store](#ssl_server_cert_store-property-syslog-struct) is used in conjunction with the [ssl_server_cert_subject](#ssl_server_cert_subject-property-syslog-struct) property to specify client certificates. If [ssl_server_cert_store](#ssl_server_cert_store-property-syslog-struct) has a value, and [ssl_server_cert_subject](#ssl_server_cert_subject-property-syslog-struct) or [ssl_server_cert_encoded](#ssl_server_cert_encoded-property-syslog-struct) is set, a search for a certificate is initiated. Please see the [ssl_server_cert_subject](#ssl_server_cert_subject-property-syslog-struct) property for details.
 Designations of certificate stores are platform dependent.
The following designations are the most common User and Machine certificate stores in Windows:
|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| MY | A certificate store holding personal certificates with their associated private keys. |
| CA | Certifying authority certificates. |
| ROOT | Root certificates. |
When the certificate store type is *cstPFXFile*, this property must be set to the name of the file. When the type is *cstPFXBlob*, the property must be set to the binary contents of a PFX file (i.e., PKCS#12 certificate store).
This property is read-only.
```

## Default Value

0

## Remarks

The type of certificate store for this certificate.

 The struct supports both public and private keys in a variety of formats. When the *cstAuto* value is used, the struct will automatically determine the type. This property can take one of the following values:

```csharp
sftp.SSHCert = new Certificate(CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11,
                               @"C:\Program Files\OpenSC Project\OpenSC\pkcs11\opensc-pkcs11.dll",
                               "123456", // PIN
                               "CN=cert_subject");
sftp.SSHUser = "test";
sftp.SSHLogon("myhost", 22);
```

```csharp
certmgr.CertStoreType = CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11;
certmgr.OnCertList += (s, e) => {
  secKeyBlob = e.CertEncoded;
};
certmgr.CertStore = @"C:\Program Files\OpenSC Project\OpenSC\pkcs11\opensc-pkcs11.dll";
certmgr.CertStorePassword = "123456"; // PIN
certmgr.ListStoreCertificates();
sftp.SSHCert = new Certificate(CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11, secKeyBlob, "123456", "*");
sftp.SSHUser = "test";
sftp.SSHLogon("myhost", 22);
```

Code Example. SSH Authentication with Security Key (without CertMgr): Alternatively, collect the necessary data using the [CertMgr](#CertMgr) struct by calling the [list_store_certificates](#CertMgr_m_ListStoreCertificates) method after setting the corresponding properties accordingly. The certificate information returned in the [on_cert_list](#CertMgr_e_CertList) event's CertEncoded parameter may be saved for later use. When using a certificate obtained with this approach, pass the previously saved security key information as the [ssl_server_cert_store](#ssl_server_cert_store-property-syslog-struct) and set [ssl_server_cert_store_password](#ssl_server_cert_store_password-property-syslog-struct) to the PIN. Code Example. SSH Authentication with Security Key (with CertMgr): |
| 99 (cstAuto) | The store type is automatically detected from the input data. This setting may be used with both public and private keys and can detect any of the supported formats automatically. |

This property must be set after all other certificate properties are set. When this property is set, a search is performed in the current certificate store to locate a certificate with a matching subject.

If a matching certificate is found, the property is set to the full subject of the matching certificate.

If an exact match is not found, the store is searched for subjects containing the value of the property.

If a match is still not found, the property is set to an empty string, and no certificate is selected.

The special value "*" picks a random certificate in the certificate store.

The certificate subject is a comma-separated list of distinguished name fields and values. For instance, "CN=www.server.com, OU=test, C=US, E=example@email.com". Common fields and their meanings are as follows:

| Field | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| CN | Common Name. This is commonly a hostname like www.server.com. |
| O | Organization |
| OU | Organizational Unit |
| L | Locality |
| S | State |

## Data Type

bool

# activate method ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This method enables sending and receiving of data.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn activate(&self) -> Result<(), IPWorksError>
```

## Remarks

This method enables sending and receiving of data. When called, the struct will create a communication endpoint (socket) that can be used for sending and receiving User Datagram Protocol (UDP) messages. This method must be called before using the struct to send and receive data.

If the [UseConnection](#UseConnection) configuration setting is set to *true*, then a local association (connection) to the remote host is also created.

# config method ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

Sets or retrieves a configuration setting.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn config(&self, configuration_string : &str) ->  Result<String, IPWorksError>
```

## Remarks

config is a generic method available in every struct. It is used to set and retrieve [configuration settings](#config-settings-syslog-struct) for the struct.

These settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the struct, access to these *internal properties* is provided through the config method.

To set a configuration setting named *PROPERTY*, you must call *Config("PROPERTY=VALUE")*, where *VALUE* is the value of the setting expressed as a string. For boolean values, use the strings "True", "False", "0", "1", "Yes", or "No" (case does not matter).

To read (query) the value of a [configuration setting](#config-settings-syslog-struct), you must call *Config("PROPERTY")*. The value will be returned as a string.

# deactivate method ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This method disables sending and receive of data.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn deactivate(&self) -> Result<(), IPWorksError>
```

## Remarks

This method disables sending and receiving of data. When called, the struct will destroy the existing socket and disable data communications.

# do_events method ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This method processes events from the internal message queue.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn do_events(&self) -> Result<(), IPWorksError>
```

## Remarks

When do_events is called, the struct processes any available events. If no events are available, it waits for a preset period of time, and then returns.

# reset method ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This method will reset the struct.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn reset(&self) -> Result<(), IPWorksError>
```

## Remarks

This method will reset the struct's properties to their default values.

# resolve_remote_host method ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This method resolves the hostname in RemoteHost to an IP address.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn resolve_remote_host(&self) -> Result<(), IPWorksError>
```

## Remarks

This method resolves the hostname specified by [remote_host](#remote_host-property-syslog-struct) to an IP address. The resolved value is available in the [remote_host](#remote_host-property-syslog-struct) property after this method returns.

In most cases, calling this method is not necessary; the struct will resolve the hostname automatically when needed. If [DelayHostResolution](#DelayHostResolution) is *true*, this method may be called to manually resolve [remote_host](#remote_host-property-syslog-struct), if desired.

# send_packet method ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This method sends a log packet to RemoteHost .

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
fn send_packet(&self, facility : i32, severity : i32, message : &str) -> Result<(), IPWorksError>
```

## Remarks

System log packets are composed of three main sections, each of which can be broken down into two smaller pieces.

The first section is the PRI, which contains the originating *facility* and *severity* of the *message*. *facility* is a value from 0 to 23, with each value being a different part of the system:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 | Kernel messages |
| 1 | User-level messages |
| 2 | Mail system |
| 3 | System daemons |
| 4 | Security/authorization messages |
| 5 | Messages generated internally by syslogd |
| 6 | Line printer subsystem |
| 7 | Network news subsystem |
| 8 | UUCP subsystem |
| 9 | Clock daemon |
| 10 | Security/authorization messages |
| 11 | FTP daemon |
| 12 | NTP subsystem |
| 13 | Log audit |
| 14 | Log alert |
| 15 | Clock daemon |
| 16 | Local use |
| 17 | Local use |
| 18 | Local use |
| 19 | Local use |
| 20 | Local use |
| 21 | Local use |
| 22 | Local use |
| 23 | Local use |

*severity* is a value from 0 to 7 using the following convention:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 | Emergency - the system is unusable |
| 1 | Alert - action must be taken immediately |
| 2 | Critical - critical conditions exist |
| 3 | Error - error conditions exist |
| 4 | Warning - warning conditions exist |
| 5 | Notice - normal but significant condition |
| 6 | Informational - informative message |
| 7 | Debug - debug-level messages |

The second section contains a timestamp and hostname, both of which are automatically generated by the struct. The third section is the *message*.

# on_connected event ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This event is fired immediately after a connection completes (or fails).

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
// SysLogConnectedEventArgs carries the SysLog Connected event's parameters.
pub struct SysLogConnectedEventArgs {
  fn remote_address(&self) -> &String
  fn remote_port(&self) -> i32
  fn status_code(&self) -> i32
  fn description(&self) -> &String
}
// SysLogConnectedEvent defines the signature of the SysLog Connected event's handler function.
pub trait SysLogConnectedEvent {
  fn on_connected(&self, sender : SysLog, e : &mut SysLogConnectedEventArgs);
}
impl <'a> SysLog<'a> {
  pub fn on_connected(&self) -> &'a dyn SysLogConnectedEvent;
  pub fn set_on_connected(&mut self, value : &'a dyn SysLogConnectedEvent);
  ...
}
```

## Remarks

This event fires after a connection completes or fails.

*status_code* is the value returned by the system Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP stack. This will be *0* if the connection was successful.

*description* contains a human readable description of the status. This will be *OK* if the connection was successful.

*remote_address* is the IP address of the remote host.

*remote_port* is the port on the remote host.

# on_connection_status event ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
// SysLogConnectionStatusEventArgs carries the SysLog ConnectionStatus event's parameters.
pub struct SysLogConnectionStatusEventArgs {
  fn connection_event(&self) -> &String
  fn status_code(&self) -> i32
  fn description(&self) -> &String
}
// SysLogConnectionStatusEvent defines the signature of the SysLog ConnectionStatus event's handler function.
pub trait SysLogConnectionStatusEvent {
  fn on_connection_status(&self, sender : SysLog, e : &mut SysLogConnectionStatusEventArgs);
}
impl <'a> SysLog<'a> {
  pub fn on_connection_status(&self) -> &'a dyn SysLogConnectionStatusEvent;
  pub fn set_on_connection_status(&mut self, value : &'a dyn SysLogConnectionStatusEvent);
  ...
}
```

## Remarks

The on_connection_status event is fired when the connection state changes: for example, upon completion of a firewall or proxy connection or completion of a security handshake.

The *connection_event* parameter indicates the type of connection event. Values may include the following:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
|  | Firewall connection complete. |
| | Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or S/Shell handshake complete (where applicable). |
|  | Remote host connection complete. |
|  | Remote host disconnected. |
|  | SSL or S/Shell connection broken. |
|  | Firewall host disconnected. |

 *status_code* has the error code returned by the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP stack. *description* contains a description of this code. The value of *status_code* is equal to the value of the error.

# on_disconnected event ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This event is fired when a connection is closed.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
// SysLogDisconnectedEventArgs carries the SysLog Disconnected event's parameters.
pub struct SysLogDisconnectedEventArgs {
  fn remote_address(&self) -> &String
  fn remote_port(&self) -> i32
  fn status_code(&self) -> i32
  fn description(&self) -> &String
}
// SysLogDisconnectedEvent defines the signature of the SysLog Disconnected event's handler function.
pub trait SysLogDisconnectedEvent {
  fn on_disconnected(&self, sender : SysLog, e : &mut SysLogDisconnectedEventArgs);
}
impl <'a> SysLog<'a> {
  pub fn on_disconnected(&self) -> &'a dyn SysLogDisconnectedEvent;
  pub fn set_on_disconnected(&mut self, value : &'a dyn SysLogDisconnectedEvent);
  ...
}
```

## Remarks

This event fires when a connection is closed.

# on_error event ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

Fired when information is available about errors during data delivery.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
// SysLogErrorEventArgs carries the SysLog Error event's parameters.
pub struct SysLogErrorEventArgs {
  fn error_code(&self) -> i32
  fn description(&self) -> &String
}
// SysLogErrorEvent defines the signature of the SysLog Error event's handler function.
pub trait SysLogErrorEvent {
  fn on_error(&self, sender : SysLog, e : &mut SysLogErrorEventArgs);
}
impl <'a> SysLog<'a> {
  pub fn on_error(&self) -> &'a dyn SysLogErrorEvent;
  pub fn set_on_error(&mut self, value : &'a dyn SysLogErrorEvent);
  ...
}
```

## Remarks

The on_error event is fired in case of exceptional conditions during message processing. Normally the struct fails with an error.

The *error_code* parameter contains an error code, and the *description* parameter contains a textual description of the error. For a list of valid error codes and their descriptions, please refer to the [Error Codes](#trappable-errors-syslog-struct) section.

# on_packet_in event ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This event fires whenever a system log packet is received.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
// SysLogPacketInEventArgs carries the SysLog PacketIn event's parameters.
pub struct SysLogPacketInEventArgs {
  fn facility_code(&self) -> i32
  fn facility(&self) -> &String
  fn severity_code(&self) -> i32
  fn severity(&self) -> &String
  fn timestamp(&self) -> &String
  fn hostname(&self) -> &String
  fn message(&self) -> &String
  fn conforms(&self) -> bool
  fn packet(&self) -> &[u8]
  fn source_address(&self) -> &String
  fn source_port(&self) -> i32
}
// SysLogPacketInEvent defines the signature of the SysLog PacketIn event's handler function.
pub trait SysLogPacketInEvent {
  fn on_packet_in(&self, sender : SysLog, e : &mut SysLogPacketInEventArgs);
}
impl <'a> SysLog<'a> {
  pub fn on_packet_in(&self) -> &'a dyn SysLogPacketInEvent;
  pub fn set_on_packet_in(&mut self, value : &'a dyn SysLogPacketInEvent);
  ...
}
```

## Remarks

System log packets are composed of three main sections, each of which can be broken down into two smaller pieces.

The first section is the PRI, which contains the originating *facility_code* and *severity_code* of the *message*. *facility_code* is a value from 0 to 23, with each value being a different part of the system. *facility* is a string representation of *facility_code* based on the following convention:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 | Kernel messages |
| 1 | User-level messages |
| 2 | Mail system |
| 3 | System daemons |
| 4 | Security/authorization messages |
| 5 | Messages generated internally by syslogd |
| 6 | Line printer subsystem |
| 7 | Network news subsystem |
| 8 | UUCP subsystem |
| 9 | Clock daemon |
| 10 | Security/authorization messages |
| 11 | FTP daemon |
| 12 | NTP subsystem |
| 13 | Log audit |
| 14 | Log alert |
| 15 | Clock daemon |
| 16 | Local use |
| 17 | Local use |
| 18 | Local use |
| 19 | Local use |
| 20 | Local use |
| 21 | Local use |
| 22 | Local use |
| 23 | Local use |

 *severity_code* is a value from 0 to 7. *severity* is a string representation of *severity_code* using the following convention:

|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 | Emergency - the system is unusable. |
| 1 | Alert - action must be taken immediately. |
| 2 | Critical - critical conditions exist. |
| 3 | Error - error conditions exist. |
| 4 | Warning - warning conditions exist. |
| 5 | Notice - normal but significant condition. |
| 6 | Informational - informative message. |
| 7 | Debug - debug-level messages. |

The second section contains the *timestamp* and *hostname*. Timestamp is a string that should conform to the standard structure "MMM DD, HH:MM:SS". The struct will search for the *timestamp* and verify that it conforms. If it conforms, the struct will set *hostname*, otherwise, everything after the PRI will be placed in *message*.

If *conforms* is True, then the original syslog packet conforms to the syslog RFC and *timestamp*, *hostname*, and *message* will all have valid values. Otherwise, you should parse the contents of *packet* to verify the fields manually.

*source_address* and *source_port* are the address and port from which *packet* was sent. This can be an intermediate syslog server that is simply forwarding packets from the original host.

# on_ssl_client_authentication event ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This is event fired when the client presents its credentials to the server.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
// SysLogSSLClientAuthenticationEventArgs carries the SysLog SSLClientAuthentication event's parameters.
pub struct SysLogSSLClientAuthenticationEventArgs {
  fn remote_address(&self) -> &String
  fn remote_port(&self) -> i32
  fn cert_encoded(&self) -> &[u8]
  fn cert_subject(&self) -> &String
  fn cert_issuer(&self) -> &String
  fn status(&self) -> &String
  fn accept(&self) -> bool
  fn set_accept(&self, value : bool)
}
// SysLogSSLClientAuthenticationEvent defines the signature of the SysLog SSLClientAuthentication event's handler function.
pub trait SysLogSSLClientAuthenticationEvent {
  fn on_ssl_client_authentication(&self, sender : SysLog, e : &mut SysLogSSLClientAuthenticationEventArgs);
}
impl <'a> SysLog<'a> {
  pub fn on_ssl_client_authentication(&self) -> &'a dyn SysLogSSLClientAuthenticationEvent;
  pub fn set_on_ssl_client_authentication(&mut self, value : &'a dyn SysLogSSLClientAuthenticationEvent);
  ...
}
```

## Remarks

This event fires when a client connects to the struct and presents a certificate for authentication. The *Accept* parameter is a recommendation on whether to continue or close the connection. This is just a suggestion: application software must use its own logic to determine whether or not to continue.

When *Accept* is False, *Status* shows why the verification failed (otherwise, *Status* contains the string "OK").

*remote_address* is the IP address of the connecting client.

*remote_port* is the source port of the connecting client.

*cert_encoded* is the base64-encoded certificate presented by the client.

*cert_subject* is the subject of the certificate presented by the client.

*cert_issuer* is the subject of the issuer of the certificate presented by the client.

*status* is the status of the certificate.

*accept* defines whether the certificate is accepted.

# on_ssl_server_authentication event ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This event fires when connecting to the server.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
// SysLogSSLServerAuthenticationEventArgs carries the SysLog SSLServerAuthentication event's parameters.
pub struct SysLogSSLServerAuthenticationEventArgs {
  fn remote_address(&self) -> &String
  fn remote_port(&self) -> i32
  fn cert_encoded(&self) -> &[u8]
  fn cert_subject(&self) -> &String
  fn cert_issuer(&self) -> &String
  fn status(&self) -> &String
  fn accept(&self) -> bool
  fn set_accept(&self, value : bool)
}
// SysLogSSLServerAuthenticationEvent defines the signature of the SysLog SSLServerAuthentication event's handler function.
pub trait SysLogSSLServerAuthenticationEvent {
  fn on_ssl_server_authentication(&self, sender : SysLog, e : &mut SysLogSSLServerAuthenticationEventArgs);
}
impl <'a> SysLog<'a> {
  pub fn on_ssl_server_authentication(&self) -> &'a dyn SysLogSSLServerAuthenticationEvent;
  pub fn set_on_ssl_server_authentication(&mut self, value : &'a dyn SysLogSSLServerAuthenticationEvent);
  ...
}
```

## Remarks

During this event, the client can decide whether or not to continue with the connection process. The *Accept* parameter is a recommendation on whether to continue or close the connection. This is just a suggestion: application software must use its own logic to determine whether or not to continue.

When *Accept* is False, *Status* shows why the verification failed (otherwise, *Status* contains the string *OK*). If it is decided to continue, you can override and accept the certificate by setting the *Accept* parameter to True.

*remote_address* is the IP address of the server.

*remote_port* is the source port of the server.

*cert_encoded* is the base64-encoded certificate presented by the server.

*cert_subject* is the subject of the certificate presented by the server.

*cert_issuer* is the subject of the issuer of the certificate presented by the server.

*status* is the status of the certificate.

*accept* defines whether the certificate is accepted.

# on_ssl_status event ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

This event shows the progress of the secure connection.

## Syntax

*Rust Syntax*

```text
// SysLogSSLStatusEventArgs carries the SysLog SSLStatus event's parameters.
pub struct SysLogSSLStatusEventArgs {
  fn remote_address(&self) -> &String
  fn remote_port(&self) -> i32
  fn message(&self) -> &String
}
// SysLogSSLStatusEvent defines the signature of the SysLog SSLStatus event's handler function.
pub trait SysLogSSLStatusEvent {
  fn on_ssl_status(&self, sender : SysLog, e : &mut SysLogSSLStatusEventArgs);
}
impl <'a> SysLog<'a> {
  pub fn on_ssl_status(&self) -> &'a dyn SysLogSSLStatusEvent;
  pub fn set_on_ssl_status(&mut self, value : &'a dyn SysLogSSLStatusEvent);
  ...
}
```

## Remarks

The event is fired for informational and logging purposes only. It is used to track the progress of the connection.

*remote_address* is the IP address of the remote machine.

*remote_port* is the port of the remote machine.

*message* is the log message.

# Config Settings ([SysLog](#struct-ipworkssyslog) Struct)

 The struct accepts one or more of the following *configuration settings*. Configuration settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the struct, access to these *internal properties* is provided through the [config](#config-method-syslog-struct) method.

### Syslog Config Settings

**AcceptData**: Whether the component can accept/receive data.When set to False, the struct will no longer be able to accept any data. The [on_packet_in](#on_packet_in-event-syslog-struct) event will not fire.

The default is True.

**AppName**: Sets the App-Name field in RFC 5424.This configuration setting specifies the App-Name field of the message as defined in RFC 5424

If *true* the struct will resolve the hostname and the IP address will be present in the [remote_host](#remote_host-property-syslog-struct) property. If *false*, the hostname is not resolved until needed by the component when a method to connect or send data is called. If desired, [resolve_remote_host](#resolve_remote_host-method-syslog-struct) may be called to manually resolve the value in [remote_host](#remote_host-property-syslog-struct) at any time.

The default value is *false*.

NOTE: This configuration setting is applicable when [Version](#Version) is set to *1* (RFC 5424)

The following example demonstrates how to obtain the structured data information from a received message:

```csharp
  int ReceivedSDElementCount = Int32.Parse(syslog.Config("ReceivedSDElementCount"));
  for(int i=0; i < ReceivedSDElementCount; i++)
  {
    syslog.Config("ReceivedSDElementIndex="+ i.ToString());
    int ReceivedSDParamCount = Int32.Parse(syslog.Config("ReceivedSDParamCount"));
    for(int j=0; j < ReceivedSDParamCount; j++)
    {
      Console.WriteLine("Param Name: " + syslog.Config("ReceivedSDParamName[" + j.ToString() + "]"));
      Console.WriteLine("Param Value: " + syslog.Config("ReceivedSDParamValue[" + j.ToString() + "]"));
    }
  }
```

**SDElementCount**: Sets the number of Structured-data elements in RFC 5424.This configuration setting specifies the number of Structured-data elements in RFC 5424.

  syslog.Config("SDParamValue[0]=high");
  syslog.Config("SDElementIndex=1");
  syslog.Config("SDElementID=exampleSDID@32473");
  syslog.Config("SDParamCount=2");
  syslog.Config("SDParamName[0]=iut");
  syslog.Config("SDParamValue[0]=3");
  syslog.Config("SDParamName[1]=eventSource");
  syslog.Config("SDParamValue[1]=Application");
```
**TCPMessageDelimiter**: The message delimiter to use (if any) when sending and receiving over TCP.When [use_tcp](#use_tcp-property-syslog-struct) is set to True, messages may be sent and received using either Octet Counting or Non-Transparent-Framing schemes to separate messages sent over the wire. This setting defines the delimiter to use in the Non-Transparent-Framing scheme when sending messages. Possible values are as follows:
|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 (None - Default) | Octet Counting is used, there is no delimiter character |
| 1 (Cr) | The carriage return character is used as a message delimiter |
| 2 (Lf) | The line feed character is used as a message delimiter |
| 3 (CrLf) | The two character carriage return line feed sequence is used as a message delimiter |
| 4 (Null) | A single null byte is used as a message delimiter |
This configuration setting is applicable only when sending a message and [use_tcp](#use_tcp-property-syslog-struct) is set to True.
**UseHostname**: Determines if the local host name or IP address is used in the Syslog header. If set to False, the struct will use the IP address of the local host name in the header of the Syslog packet. The default value is True.
**UseLocalTime**: Indicates whether to use local time or GMT time for packet timestamps.Setting this to True will generate timestamps based on the time in your locality, taking into account your time zone. When this option is False (default), GMT timestamps are generated.
**Version**: Determines which Syslog version to use.
|  |  |
| --- | --- |
| 0 (RFC 3164 - Default) | Uses RFC 3164 |
| 1 (RFC 5424) | Uses RFC 5424 |
 This configuration setting specifies which version of Syslog will be used.
NOTE: This configuration setting should be set before setting any of the [AppName](#AppName), [MsgId](#MsgId), [ProcId](#ProcId)
### UDP Config Settings
**CaptureIPPacketInfo**: Used to capture the packet information.If this is set to True, the component will capture the IP packet information.
The default value for this setting is False.
NOTE: This configuration setting is available only in Windows.
**DelayHostResolution**: Whether the hostname is resolved when RemoteHost is set.This configuration setting specifies whether a hostname is resolved immediately when [remote_host](#remote_host-property-syslog-struct) is set. If *true* the struct will resolve the hostname and the IP address will be present in the [remote_host](#remote_host-property-syslog-struct) property. If *false*, the hostname is not resolved until needed by the component when a method to connect or send data is called. If desired, [resolve_remote_host](#resolve_remote_host-method-syslog-struct) may be called to manually resolve the value in [remote_host](#remote_host-property-syslog-struct) at any time.
The default value is *false*.
**DestinationAddress**: Used to get the destination address from the packet information.If [CaptureIPPacketInfo](#CaptureIPPacketInfo) is set to True, then this will be populated with the packet's destination address when a packet is received. This information will be accessible in the DataIn event.
NOTE: This configuration setting is available only in Windows.
**DontFragment**: Used to set the Don't Fragment flag of outgoing packets.When set to True, packets sent by the struct will have the Don't Fragment flag set. The default value is False.
**LocalHost**: The name of the local host through which connections are initiated or accepted. The [local_host](#local_host-property-syslog-struct) setting contains the name of the local host as obtained by the *gethostname()* system call, or if the user has assigned an IP address, the value of that address.
In multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface), setting LocalHost to the value of an interface will make the struct initiate connections (or accept in the case of server structs) only through that interface.
If the struct is connected, the [local_host](#local_host-property-syslog-struct) setting shows the IP address of the interface through which the connection is made in internet dotted format (aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd). In most cases, this is the address of the local host, except for multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface).
**LocalPort**: The port in the local host where the struct binds. This configuration setting must be set before a connection is attempted. It instructs the struct to bind to a specific port (or communication endpoint) in the local machine.
Setting this to 0 (default) enables the system to choose a port at random. The chosen port will be shown by [local_port](#local_port-property-syslog-struct) after the connection is established.
[local_port](#local_port-property-syslog-struct) cannot be changed once a connection is made. Any attempt to set this when a connection is active will generate an error.
This configuration setting is useful when trying to connect to services that require a trusted port on the client side. An example is the remote shell (rsh) service in UNIX systems.
**MaxPacketSize**: The maximum length of the packets that can be received.This configuration setting specifies the maximum size of the datagrams that the struct will accept without truncation.
**QOSDSCPValue**: Used to specify an arbitrary QOS/DSCP setting (optional).[UseConnection](#UseConnection) must be True to use this configuration setting. This option allows you to specify an arbitrary DSCP value between 0 and 63. The default is 0. When set to the default value, the component will not set a DSCP value.
NOTE: This configuration setting uses the qWAVE API and is available only on Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and later.
**QOSTrafficType**: Used to specify QOS/DSCP settings (optional).[UseConnection](#UseConnection) must be True to use this setting. You may specify either the text or integer values: BestEffort (0), Background (1), ExcellentEffort (2), AudioVideo (3), Voice (4), and Control (5).
NOTE: This configuration setting uses the qWAVE API and is available only on Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 or above.
NOTE: QOSTrafficType must be set before setting [active](#active-property-syslog-struct) to True.
**ShareLocalPort**: If set to True, allows more than one instance of the struct to be active on the same local port.This option must be set before the struct is activated through the [active](#active-property-syslog-struct) property or it will have no effect.
The default value for this setting is False.
**UseConnection**: Determines whether to use a connected socket.[UseConnection](#UseConnection) specifies whether or not the struct should use a connected socket. The connection is defined as an association in between the local address/port and the remote address/port. As such, this is not a connection in the traditional Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) sense. It means only that the struct will send and receive data to and from the specified destination.
The default value for this setting is False.
**UseIPv6**: Whether or not to use IPv6.By default, the component expects an IPv4 address for local and remote host properties, and it will create an IPv4 socket. To use IPv6 instead, set this to True.
### Socket Config Settings
**AbsoluteTimeout**: Determines whether timeouts are inactivity timeouts or absolute timeouts.If [AbsoluteTimeout](#AbsoluteTimeout) is set to True, any method that does not complete within timeout seconds will be aborted. By default, *AbsoluteTimeout* is False, and the timeout is an inactivity timeout.
NOTE: This option is not valid for User Datagram Protocol (UDP) ports.
**FirewallData**: Used to send extra data to the firewall.When the firewall is a tunneling proxy, use this property to send custom (additional) headers to the firewall (e.g., headers for custom authentication schemes).
**InBufferSize**: The size in bytes of the incoming queue of the socket.This is the size of an internal queue in the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP stack. You can increase or decrease its size depending on the amount of data that you will be receiving. In some cases, increasing the value of the *InBufferSize* setting can provide significant improvements in performance.
Some TCP/IP implementations do not support variable buffer sizes. If that is the case, when the struct is activated the *InBufferSize* reverts to its defined size. The same happens if you attempt to make it too large or too small.
**OutBufferSize**: The size in bytes of the outgoing queue of the socket.This is the size of an internal queue in the TCP/IP stack. You can increase or decrease its size depending on the amount of data that you will be sending. In some cases, increasing the value of the *OutBufferSize* setting can provide significant improvements in performance.
Some TCP/IP implementations do not support variable buffer sizes. If that is the case, when the struct is activated the *OutBufferSize* reverts to its defined size. The same happens if you attempt to make it too large or too small.
### Base Config Settings
**BuildInfo**: Information about the product's build.When queried, this setting will return a string containing information about the product's build.
**CodePage**: The system code page used for Unicode to Multibyte translations.The default code page is Unicode UTF-8 (65001).
The following is a list of valid code page identifiers:
**LicenseInfo**: Information about the current license.When queried, this setting will return a string containing information about the license this instance of a struct is using. It will return the following information:
- Product: The product the license is for.
- Product Key: The key the license was generated from.
- License Source: Where the license was found (e.g., RuntimeLicense, License File).
- License Type: The type of license installed (e.g., Royalty Free, Single Server).
- Last Valid Build: The last valid build number for which the license will work.
**MaskSensitiveData**: Whether sensitive data is masked in log messages.In certain circumstances it may be beneficial to mask sensitive data, like passwords, in log messages. Set this to *true* to mask sensitive data. The default is *true*.
**UseInternalSecurityAPI**: Whether or not to use the system security libraries or an internal implementation. When set to *false*, the struct will use the system security libraries by default to perform cryptographic functions where applicable.
Setting this configuration setting to *true* tells the struct to use the internal implementation instead of using the system security libraries.
 On Windows, this setting is set to *false* by default. On Linux/macOS, this setting is set to *true* by default.
 To use the system security libraries for Linux, OpenSSL support must be enabled. For more information on how to enable OpenSSL, please refer to the [OpenSSL Notes](platforms.md) section.
