SSLServer Component
Properties Methods Events Config Settings Errors
The SSLServer Component is a generic Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) server component based on an asynchronous, event-driven architecture. It is designed to balance the load between connections for a fast, powerful server.
Syntax
nsoftware.IPWorksSSL.SSLServer
Remarks
The SSLServer Component supports Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) connections. When connecting over Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) the SSLServerAuthentication event allows you to check the server identity and other security attributes. The SSLStatus event provides information about the SSL handshake. Additional SSL-related settings are also supported through the Config method. The SSLCert properties are used to select a certificate for the server.
Note: A valid certificate MUST be selected before the server can function.
SSLServer is the server complement of SSLClient, which is used to create client applications. They share a common design philosophy and interface. We expect you will find SSLServer to be as easy to use as SSLClient.
By default, each instance of SSLServer can handle up to 1,000 simultaneous incoming connections. This number may be increased up to 100,000 or decreased to a lower value by using the MaxConnections configuration setting.
The connections are identified by a ConnectionId, an Id generated by the component to identify each connection. This Id is unique to each connection. SSLServer's events also include a ConnectionId as a parameter to identify the connection they relate to.
Our main goal in designing SSLServer was to make it easy to use without sacrificing performance. The component has a minimum of properties, and six events: ConnectionRequest, Connected, DataIn, Disconnected, ReadyToSend, and Error.
SSLServer can start to listen on a port by setting the Listening property to True. When a remote host asks for a connection, the ConnectionRequest event is fired. At that point, the connection can either be accepted or rejected. If the connection is accepted, a ConnectionId is assigned, and communication can start. From this point on, the operation is very similar to SSLClient. Data are sent by calling the Send method with Text as a parameter. The address and port of the incoming connection can be found by querying the RemoteHost and RemotePort properties.
Threading in Server Applications
In .NET, all socket-based components perform all Socket.IO through asynchronous methods. Each call consumes a thread from the system's thread pool, and thus the number of concurrent calls is limited to the number of worker threads returned by System.Threading.ThreadPool.GetMaxThreads. When using several components that can each create a socket connection or a single component that can create multiple socket connections, the application may enter a state in which all of the pool threads are in use for receiving. In a scenario such as this, the remote hosts may be waiting for data from the application before sending, but the application cannot send that data because all the threads are tied up waiting for inbound data. This is particularly important for server applications that use a daemon component.
For example, say a server application 'S' has a max thread pool size of three, and clients 'A' and 'B' connect to it and each client uploads a large file. After all uploads are complete, 'S' enqueues an asynchronous read request in the thread pool for each client. Because no work is being done, the thread pool immediately consumes two threads that wait for any further data from 'A' and 'B'. While 'S' is still processing the first two files it has received, client 'C' connects and uploads a relatively small file. Similarly, once that upload has completed 'S' enqueues a third read request, and the thread pool immediately consumes the third and final thread to wait for further data from 'C'. Once 'S' completes processing any of the files, it will enqueue a send request. However, because all three threads are in use and waiting for data from the clients, the send operation cannot be completed. The entire system becomes deadlocked because each of the clients is waiting for data from the server, which cannot send that data because all of its pool threads are in turn waiting for data from the clients.
To avoid a deadlock situation such as this, it is necessary to ensure that the maximum number of socket connections an application can make is always at least one less than the number of available worker threads. One method to achieve this is to call System.Threading.ThreadPool.SetMaxThreads during the application's startup to set the maximum number of threads to a value high enough to support the application for the duration of its execution. Another option is to trap an event such as ConnectionRequest and Disconnected from each component instance with logic to manage the maximum thread pool size according to the application's current needs.
Note: Server components are designed to process events as they occur. To ensure that events are processed in a timely manner, DoEvents should be called in a loop after the server is started.

ConnectionBacklog Property (SSLServer Component)
This property includes the maximum number of pending connections maintained by the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP subsystem.
Syntax
Default Value
5
Remarks
This property contains the maximum number of pending connections maintained by the TCP/IP subsystem. This value reflects the SOMAXCONN option for the main listening socket. The default value for most systems is 5. You may set this property to a larger value if the server is expected to receive a large number of connections, and queuing them is desirable.
This property is not available at design time.
Connections Property (SSLServer Component)
This property includes a collection of currently connected clients.
Syntax
public ConnectionMap Connections { get; }
Public ReadOnly Property Connections As ConnectionMap
Remarks
This property contains a collection of currently connected clients. All of the connections may be managed using this property. Each connection is described by the different fields of the Connection type.
This collection is a hash-table type of collection, in which the Connection Id string is used as the key to the desired connection. You may acquire the key for a given connection through the Connected event.
Example (Broadcasting Data)
foreach (Connection c in tcpserver1.Connections.Values) {
c.DataToSend = "Broadcast Data";
}
This property is read-only.
Please refer to the Connection type for a complete list of fields.DefaultEOL Property (SSLServer Component)
This property includes a default end-of-line (EOL) value to be used by incoming connections.
Syntax
Default Value
""
Remarks
This property contains a default end-of-line (EOL) value to be used by incoming connections. Once the component accepts and establishes an inbound connection, it will set that connection's EOL to the value in this property. By default, this value is empty (""), meaning that data will be fired as it is received.
DefaultIdleTimeout Property (SSLServer Component)
This property includes the default idle timeout for inactive clients.
Syntax
Default Value
0
Remarks
This property specifies the idle timeout (in seconds) for clients. When set to a positive value, the component will disconnect idle clients after the specified timeout.
This applies only to clients that have not sent or received data within DefaultIdleTimeout seconds.
If set to 0 (default), no idle timeout is applied.
Note: DoEvents must be called for the component to check existing connections.
DefaultMaxLineLength Property (SSLServer Component)
The property includes the default maximum line length value for inbound connections.
Syntax
Default Value
2048
Remarks
This property controls the default size of an internal buffer that holds received data while waiting for an end-of-line (EOL) string.
The minimum value for this property is 256 bytes. The default value is 2048 bytes.
DefaultSingleLineMode Property (SSLServer Component)
This property tells the component whether or not to treat new connections as line oriented.
Syntax
Default Value
False
Remarks
This property instructs the component whether or not to treat newly established connections as line-oriented protocols. If this value is True, newly accepted connections will read the incoming data stream as lines separated by a carriage return line feed (CRLF), carriage return (CR), or line feed (LF) and will ignore the end of lines (EOLs).
DefaultTimeout Property (SSLServer Component)
This property includes an initial timeout value to be used by incoming connections.
Syntax
Default Value
0
Remarks
This property is used by the component to set the operational timeout value of all inbound connections once they are established.
This property defines the timeout when sending data. When SSLEnabled is False, a value of 0 means data will be sent asynchronously, and a positive value means data is sent synchronously.
When SSLEnabled is True, all data are sent synchronously regardless of the Timeout value.
KeepAlive Property (SSLServer Component)
When True, KEEPALIVE packets are enabled (for long connections).
Syntax
Default Value
False
Remarks
This property enables the SO_KEEPALIVE option on the incoming connections. This option prevents long connections from timing out in case of inactivity.
Note: System Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP stack implementations are not required to support SO_KEEPALIVE.
This property is shared among incoming connections. When the property is set, the corresponding value is set for incoming connections as they are accepted. Existing connections are not modified.
Linger Property (SSLServer Component)
When set to True, connections are terminated gracefully.
Syntax
Default Value
True
Remarks
This property controls how a connection is closed. The default is True. In this case, the connection is closed only after all the data are sent. Setting it to False forces an abrupt (hard) disconnection. Any data that were in the sending queue may be lost.
The default behavior (which is also the default mode for stream sockets) might result in an indefinite delay in closing the connection. Although the component returns control immediately, the system might indefinitely hold system resources until all pending data are sent (even after your application closes). This means that valuable system resources might be wasted.
Setting this property to False forces an immediate disconnection. If you know that the other side has received all the data you have sent (e.g., by a client acknowledgment), then setting this property to False might be the appropriate course of action.
This property is shared among incoming connections. When the property is set, the corresponding value is set for incoming connections as they are accepted. Existing connections are not modified.
Listening Property (SSLServer Component)
This property indicates whether the component is listening for incoming connections on LocalPort.
Syntax
Default Value
False
Remarks
This property indicates whether the component is listening for connections on the port specified by the LocalPort property. Use the StartListening and StopListening methods to control whether the component is listening.
This property is read-only and not available at design time.
LocalHost Property (SSLServer Component)
The name of the local host or user-assigned IP interface through which connections are initiated or accepted.
Syntax
Default Value
""
Remarks
This property contains the name of the local host as obtained by the gethostname() system call, or if the user has assigned an IP address, the value of that address.
In multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface) setting LocalHost to the IP address of an interface will make the component initiate connections (or accept in the case of server components) only through that interface. It is recommended to provide an IP address rather than a hostname when setting this property to ensure the desired interface is used.
If the component is connected, the LocalHost property shows the IP address of the interface through which the connection is made in internet dotted format (aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd). In most cases, this is the address of the local host, except for multihomed hosts (machines with more than one IP interface).
Note: LocalHost is not persistent. You must always set it in code, and never in the property window.
LocalPort Property (SSLServer Component)
This property includes the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) port in the local host where the component listens.
Syntax
Default Value
0
Remarks
This property must be set before the component can start listening. If its value is 0, then the TCP/IP subsystem picks a port number at random. The port number can be found by checking the value of this property after the component is listening (i.e., after successfully assigning True to the Listening property).
The service port is not shared among servers so two components cannot be listening on the same port at the same time.
SSLAuthenticateClients Property (SSLServer Component)
If set to True, the server asks the client(s) for a certificate.
Syntax
Default Value
False
Remarks
This property is used in conjunction with the SSLClientAuthentication event. Please refer to the documentation of the SSLClientAuthentication event for details.
SSLCert Property (SSLServer Component)
The certificate to be used during Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) negotiation.
Syntax
public Certificate SSLCert { get; set; }
Public Property SSLCert As Certificate
Remarks
This property includes the digital certificate that the component will use during SSL negotiation. Set this property to a valid certificate before starting SSL negotiation. To set a certificate, you may set the Encoded field to the encoded certificate. To select a certificate, use the store and subject fields.
Please refer to the Certificate type for a complete list of fields.SSLProvider Property (SSLServer Component)
The Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) implementation to use.
Syntax
public SSLServerSSLProviders SSLProvider { get; set; }
enum SSLServerSSLProviders { sslpAutomatic, sslpPlatform, sslpInternal }
Public Property SSLProvider As SslserverSSLProviders
Enum SSLServerSSLProviders sslpAutomatic sslpPlatform sslpInternal End Enum
Default Value
0
Remarks
This property specifies the SSL/TLS implementation to use. In most cases the default value of 0 (Automatic) is recommended and should not be changed. When set to 0 (Automatic), the component will select whether to use the platform implementation or the internal implementation depending on the operating system as well as the TLS version being used.
Possible values are as follows:
0 (sslpAutomatic - default) | Automatically selects the appropriate implementation. |
1 (sslpPlatform) | Uses the platform/system implementation. |
2 (sslpInternal) | Uses the internal implementation. |
In most cases using the default value (Automatic) is recommended. The component will select a provider depending on the current platform.
When Automatic is selected, on Windows, the component will use the platform implementation. On Linux/macOS, the component will use the internal implementation. When TLS 1.3 is enabled via SSLEnabledProtocols, the internal implementation is used on all platforms.
The .NET Standard library will always use the internal implementation on all platforms.
ChangeRecordLength Method (SSLServer Component)
This method changes the length of received data records.
Syntax
public void ChangeRecordLength(string connectionId, int recordLength); Async Version public async Task ChangeRecordLength(string connectionId, int recordLength); public async Task ChangeRecordLength(string connectionId, int recordLength, CancellationToken cancellationToken);
Public Sub ChangeRecordLength(ByVal ConnectionId As String, ByVal RecordLength As Integer) Async Version Public Sub ChangeRecordLength(ByVal ConnectionId As String, ByVal RecordLength As Integer) As Task Public Sub ChangeRecordLength(ByVal ConnectionId As String, ByVal RecordLength As Integer, cancellationToken As CancellationToken) As Task
Remarks
This method defines the length of data records to be received (in bytes) for the specified ConnectionId.
If RecordLength is set to a positive value, the component will accumulate data until RecordLength bytes of data are received and only then will fire the DataIn event with data of the specified length RecordLength. This allows data to be received as records of known length. This method can be called at any time to change the record length, including within the DataIn event.
A value of 0 (default) means this functionality is not used.
Config Method (SSLServer Component)
Sets or retrieves a configuration setting.
Syntax
Remarks
Config is a generic method available in every component. It is used to set and retrieve configuration settings for the component.
These settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the component, access to these internal properties is provided through the Config method.
To set a configuration setting named PROPERTY, you must call Config("PROPERTY=VALUE"), where VALUE is the value of the setting expressed as a string. For boolean values, use the strings "True", "False", "0", "1", "Yes", or "No" (case does not matter).
To read (query) the value of a configuration setting, you must call Config("PROPERTY"). The value will be returned as a string.
Disconnect Method (SSLServer Component)

Interrupt Method (SSLServer Component)
This method interrupts a synchronous send to the remote host.
Syntax
public void Interrupt(string connectionId); Async Version public async Task Interrupt(string connectionId); public async Task Interrupt(string connectionId, CancellationToken cancellationToken);
Public Sub Interrupt(ByVal ConnectionId As String) Async Version Public Sub Interrupt(ByVal ConnectionId As String) As Task Public Sub Interrupt(ByVal ConnectionId As String, cancellationToken As CancellationToken) As Task
Remarks
This property is called using the Connection Id if you wish to interrupt a connection and stop a file from uploading without disconnecting the client connected to the component. If you use SendFile to upload a file, the component will run synchronously on that Connection Id until it is completed.
PauseData Method (SSLServer Component)
This method pauses data reception.
Syntax
public void PauseData(string connectionId); Async Version public async Task PauseData(string connectionId); public async Task PauseData(string connectionId, CancellationToken cancellationToken);

Remarks
This method will reset the component's properties to their default values.
Send Method (SSLServer Component)
This method sends binary data to the specified client.
Syntax
Remarks
This method sends binary data to the client identified by ConnectionId. To send text, use the SendText method instead.
When Timeout is set to 0 and SSLEnabled is set to False, the component will behave asynchronously. If you are sending data to the remote host faster than it can process it, or faster than the network's bandwidth allows, the outgoing queue might fill up. When this happens, the operation fails with exception 10035: "[10035] Operation would block" (WSAEWOULDBLOCK). You can check this error, and then try to send the data again. . The BytesSent property shows how many bytes were sent (if any). If 0 bytes were sent, then you can wait for the ReadyToSend event before attempting to send data again.

public event OnConnectionRequestHandler OnConnectionRequest; public delegate void OnConnectionRequestHandler(object sender, SSLServerConnectionRequestEventArgs e); public class SSLServerConnectionRequestEventArgs : EventArgs { public string Address { get; } public int Port { get; } public bool Accept { get; set; } }
Public Event OnConnectionRequest As OnConnectionRequestHandler Public Delegate Sub OnConnectionRequestHandler(sender As Object, e As SSLServerConnectionRequestEventArgs) Public Class SSLServerConnectionRequestEventArgs Inherits EventArgs Public ReadOnly Property Address As String Public ReadOnly Property Port As Integer Public Property Accept As Boolean End Class
Remarks
This event indicates an incoming connection. The connection is accepted by default. Address and Port will contain information about the remote host requesting the inbound connection. If you want to refuse it, you can set the Accept parameter to False.
DataIn Event (SSLServer Component)
This event is fired when data come in.
Syntax
public event OnDataInHandler OnDataIn; public delegate void OnDataInHandler(object sender, SSLServerDataInEventArgs e); public class SSLServerDataInEventArgs : EventArgs { public string ConnectionId { get; } public string Text { get; }
public byte[] TextB { get; } public bool EOL { get; } }
Public Event OnDataIn As OnDataInHandler Public Delegate Sub OnDataInHandler(sender As Object, e As SSLServerDataInEventArgs) Public Class SSLServerDataInEventArgs Inherits EventArgs Public ReadOnly Property ConnectionId As String Public ReadOnly Property Text As String
Public ReadOnly Property TextB As Byte() Public ReadOnly Property EOL As Boolean End Class
Remarks
Trapping the DataIn event is your only chance to get the data coming from the other end of the connection specified by ConnectionId. The incoming data are provided through the Text parameter.
EOL indicates whether or not the EOL string was found at the end of Text. If the EOL string was found, then EOL is True.
If Text is part of the data portion of length larger than either DefaultMaxLineLength or MaxLineLength with no EOL strings in it, then EOL is False. Please note that this means that one or more DataIn events with EOL set to False can be received during a connection.
If the EOL property is "" (empty string), then EOL can be disregarded (it is always True).
Note: Events are not re-entrant. Performing time-consuming operations within this event will prevent it from firing again in a timely manner and may affect overall performance.
Disconnected Event (SSLServer Component)
This event is fired when a connection is closed.
Syntax
public event OnDisconnectedHandler OnDisconnected; public delegate void OnDisconnectedHandler(object sender, SSLServerDisconnectedEventArgs e); public class SSLServerDisconnectedEventArgs : EventArgs { public string ConnectionId { get; } public int StatusCode { get; } public string Description { get; } }
Public Event OnDisconnected As OnDisconnectedHandler Public Delegate Sub OnDisconnectedHandler(sender As Object, e As SSLServerDisconnectedEventArgs) Public Class SSLServerDisconnectedEventArgs Inherits EventArgs Public ReadOnly Property ConnectionId As String Public ReadOnly Property StatusCode As Integer Public ReadOnly Property Description As String End Class
Remarks
If the connection is broken normally, StatusCode is 0, and Description is "OK".
If the connection is broken for any other reason, StatusCode has the error code returned by the system. Description contains a description of this code. The value of StatusCode is equal to the value of the system error.
Please refer to the Error Codes section for more information.
Error Event (SSLServer Component)
This event fires information about errors during data delivery.
Syntax
public event OnErrorHandler OnError; public delegate void OnErrorHandler(object sender, SSLServerErrorEventArgs e); public class SSLServerErrorEventArgs : EventArgs { public string ConnectionId { get; } public int ErrorCode { get; } public string Description { get; } }
Public Event OnError As OnErrorHandler Public Delegate Sub OnErrorHandler(sender As Object, e As SSLServerErrorEventArgs) Public Class SSLServerErrorEventArgs Inherits EventArgs Public ReadOnly Property ConnectionId As String Public ReadOnly Property ErrorCode As Integer Public ReadOnly Property Description As String End Class
Remarks
The Error event is fired in case of exceptional conditions during message processing. Normally, the component throws an exception.
ErrorCode contains an error code and Description contains a textual description of the error. For a list of valid error codes and their descriptions, please refer to the Error Codes section.
ConnectionId indicates the connection for which the error is applicable.
ReadyToSend Event (SSLServer Component)
This event is fired when the component is ready to send data.
Syntax
public event OnReadyToSendHandler OnReadyToSend; public delegate void OnReadyToSendHandler(object sender, SSLServerReadyToSendEventArgs e); public class SSLServerReadyToSendEventArgs : EventArgs { public string ConnectionId { get; } }
Public Event OnReadyToSend As OnReadyToSendHandler Public Delegate Sub OnReadyToSendHandler(sender As Object, e As SSLServerReadyToSendEventArgs) Public Class SSLServerReadyToSendEventArgs Inherits EventArgs Public ReadOnly Property ConnectionId As String End Class
Remarks
The ReadyToSend event indicates that the underlying Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/IP subsystem is ready to accept data after a failed Send. This event is also fired immediately after a connection is established.

Public Event OnSSLClientAuthentication As OnSSLClientAuthenticationHandler Public Delegate Sub OnSSLClientAuthenticationHandler(sender As Object, e As SSLServerSSLClientAuthenticationEventArgs) Public Class SSLServerSSLClientAuthenticationEventArgs Inherits EventArgs Public ReadOnly Property ConnectionId As String Public ReadOnly Property CertEncoded As String
Public ReadOnly Property CertEncodedB As Byte() Public ReadOnly Property CertSubject As String Public ReadOnly Property CertIssuer As String Public ReadOnly Property Status As String Public Property Accept As Boolean End Class
Remarks
This event enables the server to decide whether or not to continue. The Accept parameter is a recommendation on whether to continue or to close the connection. This is just a suggestion: application software must use its own logic to determine whether or not to continue.
When Accept is False, Status shows why the verification failed (otherwise, Status contains the string "OK").
SSLConnectionRequest Event (SSLServer Component)
This event fires when a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connection is requested.

Constructors
public Certificate();
Public Certificate()
Creates a instance whose properties can be set. This is useful for use with when generating new certificates.
public Certificate(string certificateFile);
Public Certificate(ByVal CertificateFile As String)
Opens CertificateFile and reads out the contents as an X.509 public key.
public Certificate(byte[] encoded);
Public Certificate(ByVal Encoded As Byte())
Parses Encoded as an X.509 public key.
public Certificate(CertStoreTypes storeType, string store, string storePassword, string subject);
Public Certificate(ByVal StoreType As CertStoreTypes, ByVal Store As String, ByVal StorePassword As String, ByVal Subject As String)
StoreType identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. Store is a file containing the certificate store. StorePassword is the password used to protect the store.
After the store has been successfully opened, the component will attempt to find the certificate identified by Subject . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN). The Subject parameter can also take an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load in a "Thumbprint=value" format.
public Certificate(CertStoreTypes storeType, string store, string storePassword, string subject, string configurationString);
Public Certificate(ByVal StoreType As CertStoreTypes, ByVal Store As String, ByVal StorePassword As String, ByVal Subject As String, ByVal ConfigurationString As String)
StoreType identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. Store is a file containing the certificate store. StorePassword is the password used to protect the store.
ConfigurationString is a newline-separated list of name-value pairs that may be used to modify the default behavior. Possible values include "PersistPFXKey", which shows whether or not the PFX key is persisted after performing operations with the private key. This correlates to the PKCS12_NO_PERSIST_KEY CryptoAPI option. The default value is True (the key is persisted). "Thumbprint" - an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load. When specified, this value is used to select the certificate in the store. This is applicable to the cstUser , cstMachine , cstPublicKeyFile , and cstPFXFile store types. "UseInternalSecurityAPI" shows whether the platform (default) or the internal security API is used when performing certificate-related operations.
After the store has been successfully opened, the component will attempt to find the certificate identified by Subject . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN). The Subject parameter can also take an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load in a "Thumbprint=value" format.
public Certificate(CertStoreTypes storeType, string store, string storePassword, byte[] encoded);
Public Certificate(ByVal StoreType As CertStoreTypes, ByVal Store As String, ByVal StorePassword As String, ByVal Encoded As Byte())
StoreType identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. Store is a file containing the certificate store. StorePassword is the password used to protect the store.
After the store has been successfully opened, the component will load Encoded as an X.509 certificate and search the opened store for a corresponding private key.
public Certificate(CertStoreTypes storeType, byte[] store, string storePassword, string subject);
Public Certificate(ByVal StoreType As CertStoreTypes, ByVal Store As Byte(), ByVal StorePassword As String, ByVal Subject As String)
StoreType identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. Store is a byte array containing the certificate data.

After the store has been successfully opened, the component will load Encoded as an X.509 certificate and search the opened store for a corresponding private key.
Connection Type
This is a currently connected client.
Remarks
This type describes the connection of a client that is currently connected to the component. You may use the different fields of this type to manage the connection.
Fields
AcceptData
bool (read-only)
Default: True
This field indicates whether data reception is currently enabled. When false, data reception is disabled and the DataIn event will not fire for the connection. Use the PauseData and ProcessData methods to pause and resume data reception.
BytesSent
int (read-only)
Default: 0
This field shows how many bytes were sent after calling Send or SendBytes. Please see Send or SendBytes for more information.
Note: This field will always return 0 when the component is operating in the synchronous mode (i.e., the Timeout property is set to a positive value).
Connected
bool (read-only)
Default: False
This field indicates the status of individual connections.
When true, the connection is established. Use the Disconnect method to disconnect an existing connection.
ConnectionId
string (read-only)
Default: ""
This field contains an identifier generated by the component to identify each connection. This identifier is unique to this connection.
EOL
string
Default: ""
The EOL field is used to define boundaries in the input stream using the value of the field.
The EOL field is especially useful with ASCII files. By setting it to CRLF ("\r\n") , the incoming ASCII text stream can be split into lines. In this case, one event is fired for each line received (as well as in packet boundaries). The CRLF ("\r\n") . bytes are discarded.
The EOL field is a binary string. This means that it can be more than one byte long, and it can contain NULL bytes.
EOLB
byte []
IdleTimeout
int
Default: 0
This field contains the idle timeout for this connection. This field is similar to DefaultIdleTimeout but may be set on a per-connection basis to override DefaultIdleTimeout. This field specifies the idle timeout (in seconds) for the connected client. When set to a positive value, the component will disconnect idle clients after the specified timeout.
This applies only to clients that have not sent to received data within the specified number of seconds.
If set to 0 (default), no idle timeout is applied.
Note: DoEvents must be called for the component to check existing connections.
LocalAddress
string (read-only)
Default: ""
This field shows the IP address of the interface through which the connection is passing.
LocalAddress is important for multihomed hosts so that it can be used to find the particular network interface through which an individual connection is going.
MaxLineLength
int
Default: 2048
This field is the size of an internal buffer that holds received data while waiting for an EOL string.
If an EOL string is found in the input stream before MaxLineLength bytes are received, the DataIn event is fired with the EOL parameter set to True, and the buffer is reset.
If no EOL is found, and MaxLineLength bytes are accumulated in the buffer, the DataIn event is fired with the EOL parameter set to False, and the buffer is reset.
The minimum value for MaxLineLength is 256 bytes. The default value is 2048 bytes.
ReadyToSend
bool (read-only)
Default: False
This field indicates whether the component is ready to send data.
This is true after a client connects but will become false after a failed call to Send or SendBytes. After a failed call to Send or SendBytes, the ReadyToSend event will fire and this field will be true when data can be sent again.
RecordLength
int (read-only)
Default: 0
This field holds the current record length set by ChangeRecordLength. When this value is a positive number, the component will accumulate data until RecordLength is reached and only then will fire the DataIn event with the data of length RecordLength. This allows data to be received as records of known length. This value can be changed at any time by calling ChangeRecordLength, including within the DataIn event.
A value of 0 (default) means this setting is not used.
RemoteHost
string (read-only)
Default: ""
This field shows the IP address of the remote host through which the connection is coming.
The connection must be valid or an error will be fired.
If the component is configured to use a SOCKS firewall, the value assigned to this property may be preceded with an "*". If this is the case, the host name is passed to the firewall unresolved and the firewall performs the DNS resolution.
RemotePort
int (read-only)
Default: 0
This field shows the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) port on the remote host through which the connection is coming.
The connection must be valid or an error will be fired.
SingleLineMode
bool
Default: False
This field shows the special mode for line-oriented protocols. When SingleLineMode is True, the component treats the incoming data stream as lines separated by carriage return (CR), line feed (LF), or CRLF. The EOL property is ignored.
Timeout
int
Default: 0
This field specifies a timeout for the component.
This field defines the timeout when sending data. When SSLEnabled is False, a value of 0 means data will be sent asynchronously and a positive value means data will be sent synchronously. When SSLEnabled is True, all data is sent synchronously regardless of the Timeout value. Please see the following notes for details.
Plaintext
If the Timeout field is set to 0, all operations return immediately, potentially failing with a WOULDBLOCK error if data cannot be sent immediately.
If Timeout is set to a positive value, data is sent in a blocking manner and the component will wait for the operation to complete before returning control. The component will handle any potential WOULDBLOCK errors internally and automatically retry the operation for a maximum of Timeout seconds.
SSL
If the Timeout field is set to 0, all operations will run uninterrupted until successful completion or an error condition is encountered.
If Timeout is set to a positive value, the component will wait for the operation to complete before returning control.
Additional Notes
The component will use DoEvents to enter an efficient wait loop during any potential waiting period, making sure that all system events are processed immediately as they arrive. This ensures that the host application does not freeze and remains responsive.
If Timeout expires, and the operation is not yet complete, the component throws an exception.
Note: By default, all timeouts are inactivity timeouts, that is, the timeout period is extended by Timeout seconds when any amount of data is successfully sent or received.
The default value for the Timeout field is 0 (asynchronous for plaintext, synchronous for SSL).
UserData
string
Default: ""
The UserData field holds connection-specific user-specified data.
User-specified data may be set or retrieved at any point while the connection is valid. This provides a simple way to associate arbitrary data with a specific connection.
UserDataB
byte []
Default: ""
The UserData field holds connection-specific user-specified data.
User-specified data may be set or retrieved at any point while the connection is valid. This provides a simple way to associate arbitrary data with a specific connection.

Config Settings (SSLServer Component)
The component accepts one or more of the following configuration settings. Configuration settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the component, access to these internal properties is provided through the Config method.TCPServer Config Settings
When a client connects, the client's address is checked against the list defined here. If there is no match, the ConnectionRequest event fires with an Accept value set to false. If no action is taken within the ConnectionRequest event, the client will be disconnected.
When a client connects, the client's address is checked against the list defined here. If there is a match, the ConnectionRequest event fires with an Accept value set to false. If no action is taken within the ConnectionRequest event, the client will not be connected.
Note: This is applicable only to incoming SSL connections. This should be set only if there is a specific reason to do so.
Some TCP/IP implementations do not support variable buffer sizes. If that is the case, when the component is activated, the InBufferSize reverts to its defined size. The same thing will happen if you attempt to make it too large or too small.
InBufferSize is shared among incoming connections. When the property is set, the corresponding value is set for incoming connections as they are accepted. Existing connections are not modified.
Note: This value is not applicable in macOS.

1 | IPv6 Only |
2 | IPv6 and IPv4 |
SSL Config Settings
The value is formatted as a list of paths separated by semicolons. The component will check for the existence of each file in the order specified. When a file is found, the CA certificates within the file will be loaded and used to determine the validity of server or client certificates.
The default value is as follows:
/etc/ssl/ca-bundle.pem;/etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt;/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt;/etc/pki/tls/cacert.pem
When enabled, SSL packet logs are output using the SSLStatus event, which will fire each time an SSL packet is sent or received.
Enabling this configuration setting has no effect if SSLProvider is set to Platform.
If set to True, the component will reuse the context if and only if the following criteria are met:
- The target host name is the same.
- The system cache entry has not expired (default timeout is 10 hours).
- The application process that calls the function is the same.
- The logon session is the same.
- The instance of the component is the same.

When set to 0 (default), the CRL check will not be performed by the component. When set to 1, it will attempt to perform the CRL check, but it will continue without an error if the server's certificate does not support CRL. When set to 2, it will perform the CRL check and will throw an error if CRL is not supported.
This configuration setting is supported only in the Java, C#, and C++ editions. In the C++ edition, it is supported only on Windows operating systems.
When set to 0 (default), the component will not perform an OCSP check. When set to 1, it will attempt to perform the OCSP check, but it will continue without an error if the server's certificate does not support OCSP. When set to 2, it will perform the OCSP check and will throw an error if OCSP is not supported.
This configuration setting is supported only in the Java, C#, and C++ editions. In the C++ edition, it is supported only on Windows operating systems.
Note: This configuration setting contains the minimum cipher strength requested from the security library. The actual cipher strength used for the connection is shown by the SSLStatus event.
Use this configuration setting with caution. Requesting a lower cipher strength than necessary could potentially cause serious security vulnerabilities in your application.
When the provider is OpenSSL, SSLCipherStrength is currently not supported. This functionality is instead made available through the OpenSSLCipherList configuration setting.
The value of this configuration setting is a newline-separated (CR/LF) list of certificates. For instance:
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- MIIEKzCCAxOgAwIBAgIRANTET4LIkxdH6P+CFIiHvTowDQYJKoZIhvcNAQELBQAw ... By default, the enabled cipher suites will include all available ciphers ("*").
The special value "*" means that the component will pick all of the supported cipher suites. If SSLEnabledCipherSuites is set to any other value, only the specified cipher suites will be considered.

When TLS 1.3 is negotiated (see SSLEnabledProtocols), only the following cipher suites are supported:
- TLS_AES_256_GCM_SHA384
- TLS_CHACHA20_POLY1305_SHA256
- TLS_AES_128_GCM_SHA256
SSLEnabledCipherSuites is used together with SSLCipherStrength.
Not all supported protocols are enabled by default. The default value is 4032 for client components, and 3072 for server components. To specify a combination of enabled protocol versions set this config to the binary OR of one or more of the following values:
TLS1.3 | 12288 (Hex 3000) |
TLS1.2 | 3072 (Hex C00) (Default - Client and Server) |
TLS1.1 | 768 (Hex 300) (Default - Client) |
TLS1 | 192 (Hex C0) (Default - Client) |
SSL3 | 48 (Hex 30) |
SSL2 | 12 (Hex 0C) |
Note that only TLS 1.2 is enabled for server components that accept incoming connections. This adheres to industry standards to ensure a secure connection. Client components enable TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 by default and will negotiate the highest mutually supported version when connecting to a server, which should be TLS 1.2 in most cases.
SSLEnabledProtocols: Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 Notes:
By default when TLS 1.3 is enabled, the component will use the internal TLS implementation when the SSLProvider is set to Automatic for all editions.
In editions that are designed to run on Windows, SSLProvider can be set to Platform to use the platform implementation instead of the internal implementation. When configured in this manner, please note that the platform provider is supported only on Windows 11/Windows Server 2022 and up. The default internal provider is available on all platforms and is not restricted to any specific OS version.
If set to 1 (Platform provider), please be aware of the following notes:
- The platform provider is available only on Windows 11/Windows Server 2022 and up.
- SSLEnabledCipherSuites and other similar SSL configuration settings are not supported.
- If SSLEnabledProtocols includes both TLS 1.3 and TLS 1.2, these restrictions are still applicable even if TLS 1.2 is negotiated. Enabling TLS 1.3 with the platform provider changes the implementation used for all TLS versions.
SSLEnabledProtocols: SSL2 and SSL3 Notes:
SSL 2.0 and 3.0 are not supported by the component when the SSLProvider is set to internal. To use SSL 2.0 or SSL 3.0, the platform security API must have the protocols enabled and SSLProvider needs to be set to platform.
This configuration setting is applicable only when SSLProvider is set to Internal.
If set to True, all certificates returned by the server will be present in the Encoded parameter of the SSLServerAuthentication event. This includes the leaf certificate, any intermediate certificate, and the root certificate.
Note: When SSLProvider is set to Internal this value is automatically set to true. This is needed for proper validation when using the internal provider.
When set, the component will save the session secrets in the same format as the SSLKEYLOGFILE environment variable functionality used by most major browsers and tools, such as Chrome, Firefox, and cURL. This file can then be used in tools such as Wireshark to decrypt TLS traffic for debugging purposes. When writing to this file, the component will only append, it will not overwrite previous values.
Note: This configuration setting is applicable only when SSLProvider is set to Internal.
Note: For server components (e.g., TCPServer), this is a per-connection configuration setting accessed by passing the ConnectionId. For example:

When specified the component will verify that the server certificate signature algorithm is among the values specified in this configuration setting. If the server certificate signature algorithm is unsupported, the component throws an exception.
The format of this value is a comma-separated list of hash-signature combinations. For instance:
component.SSLProvider = TCPClientSSLProviders.sslpInternal;
component.Config("SSLEnabledProtocols=3072"); //TLS 1.2
component.Config("TLS12SignatureAlgorithms=sha256-rsa,sha256-dsa,sha1-rsa,sha1-dsa");
The default value for this configuration setting is sha512-ecdsa,sha512-rsa,sha512-dsa,sha384-ecdsa,sha384-rsa,sha384-dsa,sha256-ecdsa,sha256-rsa,sha256-dsa,sha224-ecdsa,sha224-rsa,sha224-dsa,sha1-ecdsa,sha1-rsa,sha1-dsa.
To not restrict the server's certificate signature algorithm, specify an empty string as the value for this configuration setting, which will cause the signature_algorithms TLS 1.2 extension to not be sent.
The default value is ecdhe_secp256r1,ecdhe_secp384r1,ecdhe_secp521r1.
When using TLS 1.2 and SSLProvider is set to Internal, the values refer to the supported groups for ECC. The following values are supported:
- "ecdhe_secp256r1" (default)
- "ecdhe_secp384r1" (default)
- "ecdhe_secp521r1" (default)
The default value is set to balance common supported groups and the computational resources required to generate key shares. As a result, only some groups are included by default in this configuration setting.
Note: All supported groups can always be used during the handshake even if not listed here, but if a group is used that is not present in this list, it will incur an additional roundtrip and time to generate the key share for that group.
In most cases, this configuration setting does not need to be modified. This should be modified only if there is a specific reason to do so.
The default value is ecdhe_x25519,ecdhe_secp256r1,ecdhe_secp384r1,ffdhe_2048,ffdhe_3072
The values are ordered from most preferred to least preferred. The following values are supported:
- "ecdhe_x25519" (default)
- "ecdhe_x448"
- "ecdhe_secp256r1" (default)
- "ecdhe_secp384r1" (default)
- "ecdhe_secp521r1"
- "ffdhe_2048" (default)

Base Config Settings
In some non-GUI applications, an invalid message loop may be discovered that will result in errant behavior. In these cases, setting GUIAvailable to false will ensure that the component does not attempt to process external events.
- Product: The product the license is for.
- Product Key: The key the license was generated from.
- License Source: Where the license was found (e.g., RuntimeLicense, License File).
- License Type: The type of license installed (e.g., Royalty Free, Single Server).
- Last Valid Build: The last valid build number for which the license will work.
This setting only works on these components: AS3Receiver, AS3Sender, Atom, Client(3DS), FTP, FTPServer, IMAP, OFTPClient, SSHClient, SCP, Server(3DS), Sexec, SFTP, SFTPServer, SSHServer, TCPClient, TCPServer.
FIPS mode can be enabled by setting the UseFIPSCompliantAPI configuration setting to true. This is a static setting that applies to all instances of all components of the toolkit within the process. It is recommended to enable or disable this setting once before the component has been used to establish a connection. Enabling FIPS while an instance of the component is active and connected may result in unexpected behavior.
For more details, please see the FIPS 140-2 Compliance article.
Note: This setting is applicable only on Windows.
Note: Enabling FIPS compliance requires a special license; please contact sales@nsoftware.com for details.
Setting this configuration setting to true tells the component to use the internal implementation instead of using the system security libraries.
On Windows, this setting is set to false by default. On Linux/macOS, this setting is set to true by default.
If using the .NET Standard Library, this setting will be true on all platforms. The .NET Standard library does not support using the system security libraries.
Note: This setting is static. The value set is applicable to all components used in the application.
When this value is set, the product's system dynamic link library (DLL) is no longer required as a reference, as all unmanaged code is stored in that file.
