The PDFEncrypt class encrypts PDF documents.

Syntax

PDFEncrypt

Remarks

As with signing, PDF encryption is part of the PDF format itself. It is used to prevent unauthorized access to documents and is performed using either an encryption password (known as password-based or symmetric encryption) or the intended document recipient's public X.509 certificate (known as certificate-based or asymmetric encryption). The PDFEncrypt class supports both encryption types.

The benefit of this encryption scheme as defined in the standard is that encrypted PDF documents are still valid PDF documents and can be handled by almost any PDF reader. Of course, this software will need to be able to decrypt such documents, but it can always reach the metadata (information about the document) and document structure.

Password-Based Encryption

In password-based encryption, the publishers and intended users of the document must know some secret key (a password), which is used both to protect the document and access the protected data. Once the document has been protected (encrypted), the password is required to get access to the document's contents. Although this method is straightforward and widely used for protecting PDF documents, the password must be passed from the publisher to the intended users, which presents a significant disadvantage.

The following code shows how to encrypt a PDF document with a user password: pdfencrypt.InputFile = "input.pdf"; pdfencrypt.OutputFile = "password_encrypted.pdf"; pdfencrypt.Password = "password"; pdfencrypt.Encrypt(); Owner passwords are also supported. Compared to user passwords, these passwords are used to protect the permissions (set via the Permissions property) that will be embedded into the document. For example, you may want to prevent the recipient from printing or editing the document. You can encrypt the document with an owner password by specifying the OwnerPassword configuration setting before calling the Encrypt method.

Certificate-Based Encryption

Certificate-based encryption uses X.509 digital certificates to encrypt data. This encryption type provides a higher level of security compared to password-based encryption, as it relies on cryptographic key pairs, making it more difficult for unauthorized users to gain access. It is often used in environments where secure and authenticated document exchange is critical. Encrypting with a certificate (as opposed to a password) ensures that only the intended recipient who possesses the corresponding private key can decrypt the PDF document.

The following code shows how to encrypt a PDF document with a certificate: pdfencrypt.InputFile = "input.pdf"; pdfencrypt.OutputFile = "cert_encrypted.pdf"; pdfencrypt.EncryptionCert = new Certificate(CertStoreTypes.cstPublicKeyFile, "C:/MyCerts/cert.cer", "", "*"); pdfencrypt.Encrypt(); When encrypting using either a password or certificate, set the EncryptionAlgorithm property to the desired encryption algorithm. As additional encryption options, you can also decide whether the document metadata will be encrypted and embed permissions into the document via the EncryptMetadata and Permissions properties respectively.

Close Method (PDFEncrypt Class)

Closes an opened PDF document.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
int Close();

Unicode (Windows)
INT Close();
int securepdf_pdfencrypt_close(void* lpObj);
int Close();

Remarks

This method is used to close the previously opened document specified in InputFile, InputData, or SetInputStream. It should always be preceded by a call to the Open method.

Example: component.InputFile = "input.pdf"; component.Open(); // Some operation component.Close();

If any changes are made to the document, they will be saved automatically to OutputFile, OutputData, or the stream set in SetOutputStream when this method is called. To configure this saving behavior, set the SaveChanges configuration setting.

Error Handling (C++)

This method returns a result code; 0 indicates success, while a non-zero error code indicates that this method encountered an error during its execution. If an error occurs, the GetLastError() method can be called to retrieve the associated error message. (Note: This method's result code can also be obtained by calling the GetLastErrorCode() method after it returns.)

Config Method (PDFEncrypt Class)

Sets or retrieves a configuration setting.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
char* Config(const char* lpszConfigurationString);

Unicode (Windows)
LPWSTR Config(LPCWSTR lpszConfigurationString);
char* securepdf_pdfencrypt_config(void* lpObj, const char* lpszConfigurationString);
QString Config(const QString& qsConfigurationString);

Remarks

Config is a generic method available in every class. It is used to set and retrieve configuration settings for the class.

These settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the class, access to these internal properties is provided through the Config method.

To set a configuration setting named PROPERTY, you must call Config("PROPERTY=VALUE"), where VALUE is the value of the setting expressed as a string. For boolean values, use the strings "True", "False", "0", "1", "Yes", or "No" (case does not matter).

To read (query) the value of a configuration setting, you must call Config("PROPERTY"). The value will be returned as a string.

Error Handling (C++)

This method returns a String value; after it returns, call the GetLastErrorCode() method to obtain its result code; 0 indicates success, while a non-zero error code indicates that this method encountered an error during its execution. If an error occurs, the GetLastError() method can be called to retrieve the associated error message.

Encrypt Method (PDFEncrypt Class)

Encrypts a PDF document.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
int Encrypt();

Unicode (Windows)
INT Encrypt();
int securepdf_pdfencrypt_encrypt(void* lpObj);
int Encrypt();

Remarks

This method is used to encrypt the PDF document specified in InputFile, InputData, or SetInputStream. The document will be encrypted using EncryptionAlgorithm and either Password (for password-based encryption) or EncryptionCert (for certificate-based encryption), then saved in OutputFile, OutputData, or the stream set in SetOutputStream.

Example: pdfencrypt.InputFile = "input.pdf"; pdfencrypt.OutputFile = "encrypted.pdf"; pdfencrypt.Password = "password"; pdfencrypt.EncryptionAlgorithm = "AES256"; pdfencrypt.Encrypt(); Note: If the document is not already opened, this method will open it, perform the operation, then close it.

Error Handling (C++)

Encrypted Method (PDFEncrypt Class)

Checks whether a PDF document is encrypted.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
bool Encrypted();

Unicode (Windows)
bool Encrypted();
bool securepdf_pdfencrypt_encrypted(void* lpObj);
bool Encrypted();

Remarks

This method is used to determine whether or not the document specified in InputFile, InputData, or SetInputStream is encrypted. It will return false if the document is pseudo-encrypted with an empty password.

Example: pdfencrypt.InputFile = "input.pdf"; if (!pdfencrypt.Encrypted()) { pdfencrypt.OutputFile = "encrypted.pdf"; // Set Password or EncryptionCert pdfencrypt.Encrypt(); } Note: If the document is not already opened, this method will open it, perform the operation, then close it.

Error Handling (C++)

This method returns a Boolean value; after it returns, call the GetLastErrorCode() method to obtain its result code; 0 indicates success, while a non-zero error code indicates that this method encountered an error during its execution. If an error occurs, the GetLastError() method can be called to retrieve the associated error message.

Open Method (PDFEncrypt Class)

Opens a PDF document for processing.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
int Open();

Unicode (Windows)
INT Open();
int securepdf_pdfencrypt_open(void* lpObj);
int Open();

Remarks

This method is used to open the document specified in InputFile, InputData, or SetInputStream before performing some operation on it, such as encryption. When finished, call Close to complete or discard the operation.

It is recommended to use this method (alongside Close) when performing multiple operations on the document at once.

Automatic Decryption Functionality

If this method is called on an encrypted document, the Password or RecipientInfo event will fire (depending on the encryption type) as a notification that the document must be decrypted before processing can continue.

Once the correct decryption material is supplied, the class will then attempt to decrypt the document automatically within this method. When this occurs, the decrypted content is kept in memory so that the document's encrypted status is preserved when it is saved later. Use the Decrypt method to save a decrypted copy of the document instead.

Error Handling (C++)

Reset Method (PDFEncrypt Class)

Resets the class.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
int Reset();

Unicode (Windows)
INT Reset();
int securepdf_pdfencrypt_reset(void* lpObj);
int Reset();

Remarks

This method is used to reset the class's properties and configuration settings to their default values.

Error Handling (C++)

SetInputStream Method (PDFEncrypt Class)

Sets the stream containing the PDF document to process.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
int SetInputStream(SecurePDFStream* sInputStream);

Unicode (Windows)
INT SetInputStream(SecurePDFStream* sInputStream);
int securepdf_pdfencrypt_setinputstream(void* lpObj, SecurePDFStream* sInputStream);
int SetInputStream(SecurePDFStream* sInputStream);

Remarks

This method is used to set the stream from which the class will read the PDF document to be processed. If an input stream is set before the class attempts to perform operations on the document, the class will read the data from the input stream instead of from the InputFile or InputData properties.

Note: It may be useful to additionally set the CloseInputStreamAfterProcessing configuration setting to true when using input streams.

Error Handling (C++)

SetOutputStream Method (PDFEncrypt Class)

Sets the stream to write the processed document to.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
int SetOutputStream(SecurePDFStream* sOutputStream);

Unicode (Windows)
INT SetOutputStream(SecurePDFStream* sOutputStream);
int securepdf_pdfencrypt_setoutputstream(void* lpObj, SecurePDFStream* sOutputStream);
int SetOutputStream(SecurePDFStream* sOutputStream);

Remarks

This method is used to set the stream to which the class will write the resulting PDF document. If an output stream is set before the class attempts to perform operations on the document, the class will write the data to the output stream instead of writing to OutputFile or populating OutputData.

Note: It may be useful to additionally set the CloseOutputStreamAfterProcessing configuration setting to true when using output streams.

Error Handling (C++)

Error Event (PDFEncrypt Class)

Fired when information is available about errors during data delivery.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
virtual int FireError(PDFEncryptErrorEventParams *e);
typedef struct {
int ErrorCode;
const char *Description; int reserved; } PDFEncryptErrorEventParams;
Unicode (Windows) virtual INT FireError(PDFEncryptErrorEventParams *e);
typedef struct {
INT ErrorCode;
LPCWSTR Description; INT reserved; } PDFEncryptErrorEventParams;
#define EID_PDFENCRYPT_ERROR 1

virtual INT SECUREPDF_CALL FireError(INT &iErrorCode, LPSTR &lpszDescription);
class PDFEncryptErrorEventParams {
public:
  int ErrorCode();

  const QString &Description();

  int EventRetVal();
  void SetEventRetVal(int iRetVal);
};
// To handle, connect one or more slots to this signal. void Error(PDFEncryptErrorEventParams *e);
// Or, subclass PDFEncrypt and override this emitter function. virtual int FireError(PDFEncryptErrorEventParams *e) {...}

Remarks

The Error event is fired in case of exceptional conditions during message processing. Normally the class fails with an error.

The ErrorCode parameter contains an error code, and the Description parameter contains a textual description of the error. For a list of valid error codes and their descriptions, please refer to the Error Codes section.

Log Event (PDFEncrypt Class)

Fired once for each log message.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
virtual int FireLog(PDFEncryptLogEventParams *e);
typedef struct {
int LogLevel;
const char *Message;
const char *LogType; int reserved; } PDFEncryptLogEventParams;
Unicode (Windows) virtual INT FireLog(PDFEncryptLogEventParams *e);
typedef struct {
INT LogLevel;
LPCWSTR Message;
LPCWSTR LogType; INT reserved; } PDFEncryptLogEventParams;
#define EID_PDFENCRYPT_LOG 2

virtual INT SECUREPDF_CALL FireLog(INT &iLogLevel, LPSTR &lpszMessage, LPSTR &lpszLogType);
class PDFEncryptLogEventParams {
public:
  int LogLevel();

  const QString &Message();

  const QString &LogType();

  int EventRetVal();
  void SetEventRetVal(int iRetVal);
};
// To handle, connect one or more slots to this signal. void Log(PDFEncryptLogEventParams *e);
// Or, subclass PDFEncrypt and override this emitter function. virtual int FireLog(PDFEncryptLogEventParams *e) {...}

Remarks

This event is fired once for each log message generated by the class. The verbosity is controlled by the LogLevel configuration setting.

The LogLevel parameter indicates the detail level of the message. Possible values are:

0 (None) No messages are logged.
1 (Info - default) Informational events such as the basics of the chain validation procedure are logged.
2 (Verbose) Detailed data such as HTTP requests are logged.
3 (Debug) Debug data including the full chain validation procedure are logged.

The Message parameter is the log message.

The LogType parameter identifies the type of log entry. Possible values are:

  • CertValidator
  • Font
  • HTTP
  • PDFInvalidSignature
  • PDFRevocationInfo
  • Timestamp
  • TSL

Password Event (PDFEncrypt Class)

Fired when the class detects that the PDF document is encrypted with a password.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
virtual int FirePassword(PDFEncryptPasswordEventParams *e);
typedef struct {
int Available;
int Cancel; int reserved; } PDFEncryptPasswordEventParams;
Unicode (Windows) virtual INT FirePassword(PDFEncryptPasswordEventParams *e);
typedef struct {
BOOL Available;
BOOL Cancel; INT reserved; } PDFEncryptPasswordEventParams;
#define EID_PDFENCRYPT_PASSWORD 3

virtual INT SECUREPDF_CALL FirePassword(BOOL &bAvailable, BOOL &bCancel);
class PDFEncryptPasswordEventParams {
public:
  bool Available();

  bool Cancel();
  void SetCancel(bool bCancel);

  int EventRetVal();
  void SetEventRetVal(int iRetVal);
};
// To handle, connect one or more slots to this signal. void Password(PDFEncryptPasswordEventParams *e);
// Or, subclass PDFEncrypt and override this emitter function. virtual int FirePassword(PDFEncryptPasswordEventParams *e) {...}

Remarks

This event is fired during document processing to report that the document is encrypted with a password. It may be used to supply the correct decryption password to the Password property.

The Available parameter indicates whether the decryption password is already available to the class or still needs to be set. If this parameter is set to false, the correct password must be provided for the decryption attempt to succeed.

The Cancel parameter determines whether the class will stop firing this event to request a password.

RecipientInfo Event (PDFEncrypt Class)

Fired for each recipient certificate of the encrypted PDF document.

Syntax

ANSI (Cross Platform)
virtual int FireRecipientInfo(PDFEncryptRecipientInfoEventParams *e);
typedef struct {
const char *Issuer;
const char *SerialNumber;
const char *SubjectKeyIdentifier;
int Available;
int Cancel; int reserved; } PDFEncryptRecipientInfoEventParams;
Unicode (Windows) virtual INT FireRecipientInfo(PDFEncryptRecipientInfoEventParams *e);
typedef struct {
LPCWSTR Issuer;
LPCWSTR SerialNumber;
LPCWSTR SubjectKeyIdentifier;
BOOL Available;
BOOL Cancel; INT reserved; } PDFEncryptRecipientInfoEventParams;
#define EID_PDFENCRYPT_RECIPIENTINFO 4

virtual INT SECUREPDF_CALL FireRecipientInfo(LPSTR &lpszIssuer, LPSTR &lpszSerialNumber, LPSTR &lpszSubjectKeyIdentifier, BOOL &bAvailable, BOOL &bCancel);
class PDFEncryptRecipientInfoEventParams {
public:
  const QString &Issuer();

  const QString &SerialNumber();

  const QString &SubjectKeyIdentifier();

  int EventRetVal();
  void SetEventRetVal(int iRetVal);
};
// To handle, connect one or more slots to this signal. void RecipientInfo(PDFEncryptRecipientInfoEventParams *e);
// Or, subclass PDFEncrypt and override this emitter function. virtual int FireRecipientInfo(PDFEncryptRecipientInfoEventParams *e) {...}

Remarks

This event is fired during document processing for each recipient certificate that the document has been encrypted for (if applicable). It may be used to identify the certificate(s) to load and supply to the DecryptionCert property.

The Issuer parameter specifies the subject of the issuer certificate.

The SerialNumber parameter specifies the serial number of the encryption certificate.

The SubjectKeyIdentifier parameter specifies the X.509 subjectKeyIdentifier extension value of the encryption certificate, encoded as a hex string.

The Available parameter indicates whether the decryption certificate is already available to the class or still needs to be set. If this parameter is set to false, the correct certificate must be provided for the decryption attempt to succeed.

The Cancel parameter determines whether the class will stop firing this event to request a certificate.

Note: The document may be encrypted with more than one certificate (or have "more than one recipient"), in which case each certificate will cause its own invocation of this event.

Designations of certificate stores are platform dependent.

The following designations are the most common User and Machine certificate stores in Windows:

MYA certificate store holding personal certificates with their associated private keys.
CACertifying authority certificates.
ROOTRoot certificates.

When the certificate store type is cstPFXFile, this property must be set to the name of the file. When the type is cstPFXBlob, the property must be set to the binary contents of a PFX file (i.e., PKCS#12 certificate store).

StorePassword
char*

Default Value: ""

If the type of certificate store requires a password, this field is used to specify the password needed to open the certificate store.

StoreType
int

Default Value: 0

The type of certificate store for this certificate.

The class supports both public and private keys in a variety of formats. When the cstAuto value is used, the class will automatically determine the type. This field can take one of the following values:

0 (cstUser - default)For Windows, this specifies that the certificate store is a certificate store owned by the current user.

Note: This store type is not available in Java.

1 (cstMachine)For Windows, this specifies that the certificate store is a machine store.

Note: This store type is not available in Java.

2 (cstPFXFile)The certificate store is the name of a PFX (PKCS#12) file containing certificates.
3 (cstPFXBlob)The certificate store is a string (binary or Base64-encoded) representing a certificate store in PFX (PKCS#12) format.
4 (cstJKSFile)The certificate store is the name of a Java Key Store (JKS) file containing certificates.

Note: This store type is only available in Java.

5 (cstJKSBlob)The certificate store is a string (binary or Base64-encoded) representing a certificate store in Java Key Store (JKS) format.

Note: This store type is only available in Java and .NET.

23 (cstPKCS11)The certificate is present on a physical security key accessible via a PKCS#11 interface.

To use a security key, the necessary data must first be collected using the CertMgr class. The ListStoreCertificates method may be called after setting CertStoreType to cstPKCS11, CertStorePassword to the PIN, and CertStore to the full path of the PKCS#11 DLL. The certificate information returned in the CertList event's CertEncoded parameter may be saved for later use.

When using a certificate, pass the previously saved security key information as the Store and set StorePassword to the PIN.

Code Example. SSH Authentication with Security Key: certmgr.CertStoreType = CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11; certmgr.OnCertList += (s, e) => { secKeyBlob = e.CertEncoded; }; certmgr.CertStore = @"C:\Program Files\OpenSC Project\OpenSC\pkcs11\opensc-pkcs11.dll"; certmgr.CertStorePassword = "123456"; //PIN certmgr.ListStoreCertificates(); sftp.SSHCert = new Certificate(CertStoreTypes.cstPKCS11, secKeyBlob, "123456", "*"); sftp.SSHUser = "test"; sftp.SSHLogon("myhost", 22);

99 (cstAuto)The store type is automatically detected from the input data. This setting may be used with both public and private keys and can detect any of the supported formats automatically.

Subject
char*

Default Value: ""

The subject of the certificate used for client authentication.

This property must be set after all other certificate properties are set. When this property is set, a search is performed in the current certificate store to locate a certificate with a matching subject.

If a matching certificate is found, the field is set to the full subject of the matching certificate.

If an exact match is not found, the store is searched for subjects containing the value of the property.

If a match is still not found, the property is set to an empty string, and no certificate is selected.

The special value "*" picks a random certificate in the certificate store.

The certificate subject is a comma-separated list of distinguished name fields and values. For instance, "CN=www.server.com, OU=test, C=US, E=support@nsoftware.com". Common fields and their meanings are as follows:

FieldMeaning
CNCommon Name. This is commonly a hostname like www.server.com.
OOrganization
OUOrganizational Unit
LLocality
SState
CCountry
EEmail Address

If a field value contains a comma, it must be quoted.

Encoded
char*

Default Value: ""

The certificate (PEM/Base64 encoded). This field is used to assign a specific certificate. The Store and Subject fields also may be used to specify a certificate.

When Encoded is set, a search is initiated in the current Store for the private key of the certificate. If the key is found, Subject is updated to reflect the full subject of the selected certificate; otherwise, Subject is set to an empty string.

Constructors

Certificate()

Creates a instance whose properties can be set. This is useful for use with when generating new certificates.

Certificate(const char* lpEncoded, int lenEncoded)

Parses Encoded as an X.509 public key.

Certificate(int iStoreType, const char* lpStore, int lenStore, const char* lpszStorePassword, const char* lpszSubject)

StoreType identifies the type of certificate store to use. See for descriptions of the different certificate stores. Store is a byte array containing the certificate data. StorePassword is the password used to protect the store.

After the store has been successfully opened, the component will attempt to find the certificate identified by Subject . This can be either a complete or a substring match of the X.509 certificate's subject Distinguished Name (DN). The Subject parameter can also take an MD5, SHA-1, or SHA-256 thumbprint of the certificate to load in a "Thumbprint=value" format.

SecurePDFStream Type

Syntax

SecurePDFStream (declared in securepdf.h)

Remarks

The PDFEncrypt class includes one or more API members that take a stream object as a parameter. To use such API members, create a concrete class that implements the SecurePDFStream interface and pass the PDFEncrypt class an instance of that concrete class.

When implementing the SecurePDFStream interface's properties and methods, they must behave as described below. If the concrete class's implementation does not behave as expected, undefined behavior may occur.

Properties

CanRead Whether the stream supports reading.

bool CanRead() { return true; }
CanSeek Whether the stream supports seeking.

bool CanSeek() { return true; }
CanWrite Whether the stream supports writing.

bool CanWrite() { return true; }
Length Gets the length of the stream, in bytes.

int64 GetLength() = 0;

Methods

Close Closes the stream, releasing all resources currently allocated for it.

void Close() {}

This method is called automatically when a SecurePDFStream object is deleted.

Flush Forces all data held by the stream's buffers to be written out to storage.

int Flush() { return 0; }

Must return 0 if flushing is successful; or -1 if an error occurs or the stream is closed. If the stream does not support writing, this method must do nothing and return 0.

Read Reads a sequence of bytes from the stream and advances the current position within the stream by the number of bytes read.

int Read(void* buffer, int count) = 0;

Buffer specifies the buffer to populate with data from the stream. Count specifies the number of bytes that should be read from the stream.

Must return the total number of bytes read into Buffer; this may be less than Count if that many bytes are not currently available, or 0 if the end of the stream has been reached. Must return -1 if an error occurs, if reading is not supported, or if the stream is closed.

Seek Sets the current position within the stream based on a particular point of origin.

int64 Seek(int64 offset, int seekOrigin) = 0;

Offset specifies the offset in the stream to seek to, relative to SeekOrigin. Valid values for SeekOrigin are:

  • 0: Seek from beginning.
  • 1: Seek from current position.
  • 2: Seek from end.

Must return the new position within the stream; or -1 if an error occurs, if seeking is not supported, or if the stream is closed (however, see note below). If -1 is returned, the current position within the stream must remain unchanged.

Note: If the stream is not closed, it must always be possible to call this method with an Offset of 0 and a SeekOrigin of 1 to obtain the current position within the stream, even if seeking is not otherwise supported.

Write Writes a sequence of bytes to the stream and advances the current position within the stream by the number of bytes written.

int Write(const void* buffer, int count) = 0;

Buffer specifies the buffer with data to write to the stream. Count specifies the number of bytes that should be written to the stream.

Must return the total number of bytes written to the stream; this may be less than Count if that many bytes could not be written. Must return -1 if an error occurs, if writing is not supported, or if the stream is closed.

Config Settings (PDFEncrypt Class)

The class accepts one or more of the following configuration settings. Configuration settings are similar in functionality to properties, but they are rarely used. In order to avoid "polluting" the property namespace of the class, access to these internal properties is provided through the Config method.

PDFEncrypt Config Settings

CloseInputStreamAfterProcessing:   Whether to close the input stream after processing.

This setting determines whether the input stream specified in SetInputStream will be closed after processing is complete. The default value is true.

CloseOutputStreamAfterProcessing:   Whether to close the output stream after processing.

This setting determines whether the output stream specified in SetOutputStream will be closed after processing is complete. The default value is true.

CompressStreams:   Whether to compress stream objects.

This setting specifies whether the bytes in the document's stream objects will be compressed when the Encrypt method is called. The default value is false.

  • "RIPEMD160"
  • "MD2"
  • "MD5"
  • "MD5SHA1"
OwnerPassword:   The owner password to encrypt the document with.

This setting is used to provide the document owner password for encryption. Though it may be different from Password, most implementations use the same value for both.

RC4KeyBits:   The number of key bits used for the RC4 algorithm.

This setting specifies the number of key bits used for the RC4 algorithm. The default value is 128.

SaveChanges:   Whether to save changes made to the PDF document.

This setting specifies whether and how changes made to the PDF document will be saved when the Close method is called. Possible values are:

0 Discard all changes.
1 Save the document to OutputFile, OutputData, or the stream set in SetOutputStream, even if it has not been modified.
2 (default) Save the document to OutputFile, OutputData, or the stream set in SetOutputStream, but only if it has been modified.
TempPath:   The location where temporary files are stored.

This setting specifies an absolute path to the location on disk where temporary files are stored. It can be useful to reduce memory usage.

UseOAEP:   Whether to use Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding (OAEP) during encryption and decryption.

This setting specifies whether Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding (OAEP) will be used during encryption and decryption. The default value is false, meaning the class will use PKCS#1.

To specify non-default OAEP options, please see OAEPRSAHashAlgorithm, OAEPMGF1HashAlgorithm, and OAEPParams.

LicenseInfo:   Information about the current license.

When queried, this setting will return a string containing information about the license this instance of a class is using. It will return the following information:

  • Product: The product the license is for.
  • Product Key: The key the license was generated from.
  • License Source: Where the license was found (e.g., RuntimeLicense, License File).
  • License Type: The type of license installed (e.g., Royalty Free, Single Server).
  • Last Valid Build: The last valid build number for which the license will work.
MaskSensitiveData:   Whether sensitive data is masked in log messages.

In certain circumstances it may be beneficial to mask sensitive data, like passwords, in log messages. Set this to true to mask sensitive data. The default is true.

This setting only works on these classes: AS3Receiver, AS3Sender, Atom, Client(3DS), FTP, FTPServer, IMAP, OFTPClient, SSHClient, SCP, Server(3DS), Sexec, SFTP, SFTPServer, SSHServer, TCPClient, TCPServer.

ProcessIdleEvents:   Whether the class uses its internal event loop to process events when the main thread is idle.

If set to False, the class will not fire internal idle events. Set this to False to use the class in a background thread on Mac OS. By default, this setting is True.

SelectWaitMillis:   The length of time in milliseconds the class will wait when DoEvents is called if there are no events to process.

If there are no events to process when DoEvents is called, the class will wait for the amount of time specified here before returning. The default value is 20.

UseInternalSecurityAPI:   Whether or not to use the system security libraries or an internal implementation.

When set to false, the class will use the system security libraries by default to perform cryptographic functions where applicable.

Setting this configuration setting to true tells the class to use the internal implementation instead of using the system security libraries.

On Windows, this setting is set to false by default. On Linux/macOS, this setting is set to true by default.

To use the system security libraries for Linux, OpenSSL support must be enabled. For more information on how to enable OpenSSL, please refer to the OpenSSL Notes section.

Trappable Errors (PDFEncrypt Class)

Error Handling (C++)

Call the GetLastErrorCode() method to obtain the last called method's result code; 0 indicates success, while a non-zero error code indicates that this method encountered an error during its execution. Known error codes are listed below. If an error occurs, the GetLastError() method can be called to retrieve the associated error message.
