The OAuthClient struct implements interaction between the client, the resource owner (end-user), and the authorization server via OAuth 2.0 protocol.

OAuth 2.0 is a popular protocol for implementing a trusted third party-based user authentication. It is used in many modern environments, including Microsoft (Entra ID), Google, and Amazon ecosystems. OAuth relies on browser-based experience for performing the initial, hands-on, service-dependent authentication (for example, by providing Microsoft credentials in a login form), which produces an authorization token. Client applications, such as email clients, then can use the authorization token to authenticate directly to the services (such as SMTP or IMAP).
OAuthClient implements interaction between the client (an application that needs access to a protected resource), the resource owner (end-user), and the authorization server via OAuth 2.0 (RFC 6749) protocol.
Unlike direct authentication types (login/password or certificate-base), which happen between the client and the server, OAuth2 authentication involves three participants (the client, the service, and the authorization service), and consists of two separate flows:
- The client connects to the central authentication server, completes a browser-based authentication, and receives an authentication token,
- The client uses the authentication token to authenticate to the desired service (e.g. SMTP).
While providers may impose different requirements on their OAuth2 configuration, a typical registration and authentication flow consists of the following steps:
Registration
This is done manually by signing in to the service provider's authentication/authorization service and registering your 'application' (effectively, an equivalent of the user account in traditional systems) there. This may take different forms (see an example of registering a Microsoft Entra ID application below), but one way or another this process should yield the following deliverables:
- Client ID and Client Secret: your application's credentials on the authentication service.
- Auth URL: the URL that triggers the browser-based authorization workflow and returns the access token.
- Token URL: the URL that returns an access token in response to the refresh token.
- Redirect URL: a local URL that the authorization service redirects the browser to upon completion of the authorization routine. Services increasingly want this to be an HTTPS (not an HTTP) endpoint.
- Scope: a string that describes the set of services that the token holder can access. The exact value expected here is service-dependent.
Initial authorization
This step is performed once in a while. The goal is to exchange the permanent credentials obtained on the preceding step (Client ID and Client Secret) to an ephemeral, short-lived access token. This exchange requires the user to be present and follow the authentication flow conducted by the authentication/authorization service in their browser.
The outcome of the authentication process is the access token and/or refresh token. These are the ultimate authentication credentials that can later be used by the client applications (e.g. a mail client).
Access tokens expire after certain period of time. Your application must keep an eye on the token's expiration time (using expires_in and expires_at properties), and make sure to get a new access token by refreshing it, or re-authenticating from scratch using the authorize call.
The code snippet below illustrates the use of OAuthClient for retrieving an access token.

Protocol-level authentication with access token
Now that you have the access token, you can use it in your application-level components to authenticate to the service.
The respective code for SMTPClient authentication looks like this:

Object Lifetime
The new() method returns a mutable reference to a struct instance. The object itself is kept in the global list maintained by SecureBlackbox. Due to this, the OAuthClient struct cannot be disposed of automatically. Please, call the dispose(&mut self) method of OAuthClient when you have finished using the instance.

Asynchronous DCAuth-driven communication requires that parties authenticate each other with a secret pre-shared cryptographic key. This provides an extra protection layer for the protocol and diminishes the risk of the private key becoming abused by foreign parties. Use this property to provide the pre-shared key identifier, and use external_crypto_key_secret to pass the key itself.
The same KeyID/KeySecret pair should be used on the DCAuth side for the signing requests to be accepted.

HTTPS redirects support
Services increasingly require that redirects are made to HTTPS-enabled endpoints (e.g. "https://localhost:5050/"). OAuthClient does support them. What you need to do is set up the TLS server certificate that the OAuth receiver will be presenting to the user's web browser. The certificate is an integral part of the TLS handshake process. The provided TLS certificate must contain a matching private key. You can generate the certificate using the CertificateManager component, or third-party software such as OpenSSL. Note that some browsers no longer accept self-signed TLS certificates, which typically means that you need to generate and set up a pair of certificates (the self-signed root certificate and the subordinate web server certificate) to make your receiver work with such browsers.

This setting controls the way the revocation checks are performed for every certificate in the chain. Typically certificates come with two types of revocation information sources: CRL (certificate revocation lists) and OCSP responders. CRLs are static objects periodically published by the CA at some online location. OCSP responders are active online services maintained by the CA that can provide up-to-date information on certificate statuses in near real time.
There are some conceptual differences between the two. CRLs are normally larger in size. Their use involves some latency because there is normally some delay between the time when a certificate was revoked and the time the subsequent CRL mentioning that is published. The benefits of CRL is that the same object can provide statuses for all certificates issued by a particular CA, and that the whole technology is much simpler than OCSP (and thus is supported by more CAs).
This setting lets you adjust the validation course by including or excluding certain types of revocation sources from the validation process. The crcAnyOCSPOrCRL setting (give preference to the faster OCSP route and only demand one source to succeed) is a good choice for most typical validation environments. The "crcAll*" modes are much stricter, and may be used in scenarios where bulletproof validity information is essential.
NOTE: If no CRL or OCSP endpoints are provided by the CA, the revocation check will be considered successful. This is because the CA chose not to supply revocation information for its certificates, meaning they are considered irrevocable.
NOTE: Within each of the above settings, if any retrieved CRL or OCSP response indicates that the certificate has been revoked, the revocation check fails.

Assign a handler to this event if you need to delegate a low-level signing operation to an external, remote, or custom signing engine. Depending on the settings, the handler will receive a hashed or unhashed value to be signed.
The event handler must pass the value of Data to the signer, obtain the signature, and pass it back to the struct via the SignedData parameter.
OperationId provides a comment about the operation and its origin. It depends on the exact struct being used, and may be empty. HashAlgorithm specifies the hash algorithm being used for the operation, and Pars contains algorithm-dependent parameters.
The struct uses base16 (hex) encoding for the Data, SignedData, and Pars parameters. If your signing engine uses a different input and output encoding, you may need to decode and/or encode the data before and/or after the signing.

The struct fires this event to let the application know about some event, occurrence, or milestone in the struct. For example, it may fire to report completion of the document processing. The list of events being reported is not fixed, and may be flexibly extended over time.

Remarks
This event fires to notify the implementation that a remote TLS server has requested a client certificate. The Host parameter identifies the host that makes a request, and the CANames parameter (optional, according to the TLS spec) advises on the accepted issuing CAs.
Use the tls_client_chain property in response to this event to provide the requested certificate. Please make sure the client certificate includes the associated private key. Note that you may set the certificates before the connection without waiting for this event to fire.
This event is preceded by the on_tls_handshake event for the given host and, if the certificate was accepted, succeeded by the on_tls_established event.

Ratios must be in the 0..100 range. Maximum age and overlap values must be non-negative.
